. There is a very strange looking green aircraft behind the SAA B744 to the left. It has the tail of a trijet will the front of a B747. It's probably some mock-up but what for? Emergency evacuation trials? Any info and photos are appreciated

It's a mock up for Fire Brigade training. It has a trijet tail so they can practise fighting tail engine fires, and a B747 front so they can practise upper deck evacuation/fire fighting.

We've discussed this here before. Some of you guys seem to be labouring under the illusion that it's just a fire trainer. Actually it's a DC747, a DC10 with a bubble at the front. As you can tell by the livery, it was only ordered by one airline, Braniff. This is the only example left in the world of this rare and little-documented chapter in commercial aviation.

Wasn't Air Switzerland going to start longhaul-ops with it?  Wink/being sarcastic

I believe that celeidh ordered 80 of them for long range low cost operations from GLA  Laugh out loud.

We just have a trident here in Bristol. Do they practice evacuations in the DC8? God that must be terrible if they do, people sitting in those seats! Big grin

What a waste of a classic airliner.

EGGD, no evacuation exercises with people other than fire fighters! You might be astonished but inside this DC-8, there is absolutely no smell of smoke or anything like it! I didn't sit on the seats though...

Indeed I have seen this on 'Airport' as well as for real, they can set fires in certain places, like the one engine or inside the aircraft, they sometimes put dummies in there, which the firemen have to find an rescue, and also put out the fire!  Smile
