I'm Flying Swiss This Summer, Need Feedback

Tue May 06, 2003 7:09 am

Hey guys,
Well I'm going over to Europe this coming June/July for 2 1/2 weeks to visit, relax, and immerse myself in the culture. I'll be in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. I'll be taking Swiss International Airlines round-trip. My itinerary is as follows:

25JUN03 LX023 JFK-GVA
11JUL03 LX016 GVA-JFK

I was wondering if I could get peoples opinions and feedback on Swiss that have flown them long-haul previously. Both of those flights are on A332's (ahhhh PTV's!!). Anything that I should look out for? Are they just the average airline....or is there something that sets them apart from the rest? Just trying to get a feel of what I should expect seeing as this is my first time on Swiss. My hopes are for safe, pleasurable, and uneventful flights (though I woulnd't mind one of my legs being switched over to an MD-11 so I could have a little variety, but hey I can't complain). Thanks in advance.

Bryan

Hi Bryan.

I flew SWISS last December from ZRH to LAX in a MD11 ( yeah I know I was lucky!!! ) registration HB-IWM. It was a great flight of about 13:00 hours, a little longer because we got some head winds and had to make a last minute landing switch that took us another 20 minutes. The MD11 is a great and solid aircraft, very confortable. But lets talk about what you want to know, the service - it was a great service on board, we had the choise of pasta or chicken, both were good, we had wine on board ( not single small bottles but by glass ) and all the other spirits we want if you like! We had 3 movies but of course the MD11 don't have PTV ( I hope to get that on the return this next December when I will fly the brand new A340-300 ). During part of the flight there was a table in the back of the plane with chocolats, drinks, pretzels for those who were ungry all over! The F/A's were great and nice and I can't complain, they even gave some toys for my kids so they could play a while.
So globaly it was a nice and great flight.
I think you gonna have a value added flight because you'll have PTV in your flight to GVA. GVA is a great airport and don't forget to visit the Lake Leman and if you want to go a little further visit Lausanne, it's worth of a visit, great town!
regards and have a great time in Switzerland!

990,
Thanks for the information. I like the idea of them setting up the table in the back with a snack sort of deal. Always good when they can keep the little tikes busy so they arent screaming and throwing fits. Though my flights will be considerably shorter....about 7 hours outbound, and 8:30 coming home. I generally read when I fly....but I think I will fool around with the PTV a bit-for some reason I have the hardest time sleeping when I fly. If I do get some sleep it's usually only for about 20 minute spurts. Really sounds like they have a nice service going though. I hope my experience with LX is as nice as yours.

I'm excited about GVA. I read an article about GVA a few months back, and it seems like it's an interesting place. As for where we will be in those three countries:

Geneva, Zurich, Zermatt, Strasbourg, Konigsbourg, Riquewihr, Blackforest Region, Heidelberg, Rothenburg, Dinkelsbuhl, Vienna, Salzburg, Westendorf, Tirol, Rattenberg, Innsbruck, Lucern, Engelberg, and back to Geneva to fly home.

So it's a pretty well-rounded trip. We left out some locations on purpose as we wanted to try to focus on some of the smaller cities to experience the true culture a little more. But again, thank you for your info. Sounds like it will be nice. Anyone else have any input?

DeltaMD11,

I think there are a good few Swiss reports in the trip reports forum so it might be worth a luck. While Swiss isn't perfect and as always much depends on the crew, they are above average.

Sounds like you have a nice trip planned. How are you getting around? Car?

Jeremiah,
As I am traveling with a group of friends (actually there are about 20 of us going) we have a delux motorcoach to take us around in. The trip was actually planned by American Music Abroad, which is a very well-known travel company that provides the chance for groups of American students to go over and display their musical talent in Europe. Our sponsor is a history teacher from my High School. Not really a school trip per se...just organized through school. We aren't going over to play music, but rather going to enculture ourselves, and further our knowledge of European history-just used AMA to make all of our travel plans as they know the best accomodations and things of that nature. The trip came at a nominal cost though (ended up being $3000 for 2 1/2 weeks, and I'm going to be taking a a good bit over with me for spending money).

Bryan,

Sounds like a brilliant trip.

Swiss are currently running a double miles promotion GVA-JFK-GVA (due to Continental's entrance). While it is currently only running until until 05/31, I'd say it might be extended.

Well in case you have some time in GVA to do some spotting/photography (I guess not looking at that Itinerary ) and want someone to show you the spots, drop me an email (I spend most of the summer in Geneva).

Jeremiah

Hello DeltaMD11:

I could tell you that SWISS is a truly great airline. The service is by far superior than in other mayor carriers. Specially on-board. However, I have only flown this airline on European flights... but I´m sure longhaul its as good or even better. Enjoy Europe!

Jeremiah,
I'd love to be able to do some spotting while I am over there and catch up witha few a.net members, but I'm afraid that due to our itinerary we will be having jam-packed days (we do have days here and there that are left to us to go on our own around the city and see what we want, but I'm not sure which exact days those are as of yet). I signed up for AAdvantage the other day, so I figure I'll be able to pick up a few miles for later use on an upgrade or something of that sort (I don't fly AA a lot because I tend to stick with DL, HP, CO, and NW....but within the next 3 years I'll fly them to keep those miles going I guees). Thanks for the offer, and once things firm up a bit more, I'll drop you an e-mail.

Bry

Hi

I have found Swiss to be a bit of a disappointment when flying Brazil-Zurich last year. I found the Economy to be pretty below-average, the wines they served were Swiss(??!) and pretty horrible, and the crew were not in good spirits - they had an air of rudeness about them, a bit like Lufthansa really. I'm sticking to BA or Air France next time, I honestly think Swiss is no big deal.

Found economy to be below average in what aspect? I know their seat pitch is average, and PTV's in economy is a definite plus? Could you please explain that notion a little more to better my understanding of it? I wont be drinking wine anyways as I stick with juice, water, or coffee. Thanks for your feedback so far guys, keep it rolling.

Seats were hard & uncomfortable (unlike BA World Traveller seats which feel much plusher), no PTVs (sorry, I think it makes a BIG difference on longer flights) and the service was below-average: crew were rude if you couldn't speak German, and they just threw the meal in front of you, no choice.

I was expecting much better to be honest, given all the previous hype about Swiss or Swissair. They are firmly in the Lufthansa category, in my opinion: reliable & safe but unfriendly crew.

I'm sorry if my experience doesn't tally with the majority. My main gripe was the rudeness of the crew and lack of IFE. The crew in particular spoiled the flight, and the experience was sufficiently unpleasant for me to decide to stick to BA, who consistently offer a good product, and friendly crew. In any case, I wouldn't book with Swiss right now; the reports I have read suggest they are rapidly running out of cash.

Well, so your possibilities to book a flight are very limited, as almost every airline is running out of cash quite fast these days..........

@Delta MD11

If I'm not totally wrong informed, the JFK-GVA legs are flown with A330's. This means that IFE is available (PTV's). Just what I heard (never flown on them yet), the economy seats are a bit small.......... Concerning the service of the crews, of cours you can have bad luck and encounter a grumpy crew, butwho on this board never had a bad day?

So, enjoy your flight and your stay in Switzerland!!

Cheers, Thomas
