LH 742 To Be Ferried To MZJ Next Week

Wed May 07, 2003 12:10 am

The final two B747-200 (D-ABYX, D-ABZE) that have been stored in FRA the last few weeks will be ferried to Marana (via PHX) next week (around May 15).
They will be stored (along the two others that are still in MZJ) for the next 12 months (ensuring a possible reactivation within six months)

I was hoping to join the flight, but it won't be possible as a special "C Class" visa is needed for those ferry flight, and since I don't have a required task on such a flight, such a visa is unlikely to be granted  Sad

Konstantin - does this mean YVR will be seeing 744 service this summer?

YVR is already a 744 service at the moment until the end of October.

Konstantin, do you know why they fly to PHX first? I have been to Marana last year and as I remember thay have all the facilities there to 'receive' an intercontinental flight...

I'm not sure, but I think they go thru Customs here in PHX.

That's the reason 4holer. Some owners use PHX, some TUS. In fact some use other airports but few if they can reach TUS or PHX.

Konstantin,
So you won't have to answer that question in the email... Didn't see this until after I sent it to you...

Why don't they operate FRA-PHX with the 742 on that day? After all it's not daily anymore so it wouldn't hurt that much if there would be no return flight that day...

I sure hope that somebody will be there to take some pics at PHX!

I guess they fly the plane 'green' to the desert, so they will take out all the valuable, sensitive stuff the pax needs which could be damaged during storage (seats,galley-parts,PTVs (in biz), catering carts etc.).

Godbless, that would pose a bit of a problem as they would then have to fly an empty non-amortized aircraft for the next PHX-FRA flight. Expensive.

ClipperNo1, It is extremely rare for an airliner to arrive for storage with anything removed except the carts. The airlines would much rather have an airplane that could be turned for lease or re-entry into service quickly. Aircraft coming in for scrapping do have most of the interior removed if it can be used on another current aircraft. What is left is removed at MZJ, or MHV, TUS, ROW, etc.) and shipped back to the owner.
