Air India 707's Carried Frieght On Main Deck?

Were AI's 707's configured to carry freight on the Main Deck?

BTW, what was the config of AI 707's? 3x3 seating in economy i presume. Was there a J/F class?

I know an airline that carries excess luggage and cargo in the cockpit from time to time  Big grin

I remember reading that the 707 had an option whereby it could be converted from pax config to cargo config within a few minutes, or flown as combie. Perhaps Air India bought 707s with that option.

Source: My memory of "the Max Ward Story" - I believe Wardair's 707s were convertible combies, but after they found out how profitable the concept turned out to be, the Canadian government prohibited this kind of operation to protect their Air Canada...

Only VT-DVB "Kamet" and VT-DXT "Trishul" were delivered as Combi options. They were configured in a quick-change version to carry freight in the forward third of the main deck and passengers behind that if needed, but could (and did) also operate in all passenger versions as well.

The standard configuration of the 707s was 2-2 in First Class and 3-3 in Economy Class. The actual seating config varied by route and the different config options were F24/Y108, F16/Y126, F12/Y132 and Y162.
