PIT's Concourse E To Close...

Well...I guess we all knew it was coming. I love the warning about the D concourse too  Sad

One thing in the article I dont understand is how "253 of the airport's 400" daily flights leave the commuter terminal? I dont see how that is possible, especially since quite a few turboprop flights now already leave through Concourse A? I also thought PIT had more than 150 mainline flights (including carriers other than US too)

There has been some speculation that US might cutback at PIT even further and transfer between 100-150 commuter flights from PIT to PHL. This might be an indication that the move could be coming soon. It is already evident in some cases. Mesa operates almost 2 or 3 times as many flights in PHL as it did several months ago. Those planes had to come from somewhere.

The problem with PIT is that it does not generate enough O&D traffic and the leases on gates are expensive. It's a beautiful airport but it doesn't attract a substantial critical mass. Most traffic through PIT is connecting. US Airways will inevitably focus its growth on Philadelphia going forward. PHL is a gateway to Europe, has the geographic pull of the nation's fifth largest metropolitan area, and the high paying business travellers that support a lot of its flights.

This doesn't bode well for PIT. I was hoping that PIT-SAT would return in the future. But, it seems US has different plans for PIT than we'd like.

I have changed planes in PIT and PHL on US, while flying TPA-MHT and I must say that I would rather use PIT any day. The last time I flew on US was back in 1995 and even at that time it seemed by default they would rather route me through PHL, or even DCA, than PIT. I know there were more flights to PHL from TPA than to PIT, so frequency might have been an issue. MHT-CLT service was not available back then, so PIT, PHL, DCA, or LGA were the only choices for connections from TPA to MHT.

Needless to say, I would be sad to see the PIT hub go. It is a far superior facility to PHL.

O&D stands for Origin and Departure, ie: passengers who are starting at PIT, or have PIT as there final destination
