Ever See Air Force One In Person?

Wed May 14, 2003 1:56 am

I never had....until this morning.

Taking off out of Indianapolis International @ 11:20 AM (EST), Tuesday, May 13th, the beautiful Boeing 747-200 flew over my house, heading west toward a stop in Missouri.

A gorgeous sight on a pretty, cloudless day!

Anybody else in Indy see AF1 land or take off on May 12-13?

Relay your "I Saw Air Force One" anecdotes below.

 Smile

No anecdotes, just saw it twice in Berlin (TXL) bringing in and flying out Bill Clinton. Very impressive landing procedure...took the whole runway!
I know it's only VfB but I like it!

Back in the days before 9/11, I was eating lunch and watching planes at MCI and Air Force One landed on 19R. He used most of the runway since he was going over to the TWA base...it kind of pissed off the pilots of the airliners that had been holding for it's arrival as the thing taxied leisurely down the runway.

1. Before Stapleton closed, the Pope came to Denver. AF1 flew in, followed by the Pope's Alitalia 742, followed by the old AF1 707 (the VP was on it this time). The Pope ended up leaving on an AA 763ER back to Rome.

2. Since then, I've seen AF1 at DIA a few times, as well as Buckley Air Base here in Colorado. Even watched AF1 fly from DIA to Buckley. . .maybe the shortest 747 flight ever!?!?

The first time I saw AF1 was shortly after 9/11 when President Bush came to ORD to give a speech (more of a pep talk) to employees of United and American. Parts of that speech were later used in commercials urging Americans to travel, use hotels, eat out, etc. I've seen it come into ORD a couple of times since then.

I was also able to come close up to AF2 (the 757) at MDW during the 2000 Presidential campaign. I used to work at MDW at the time so I had the opportunity to take some pictures of it on the ramp before getting chased off by CPD.

A friend of mine is a Ramp Lead for HP at PHX, and one time AF1 was parked down by the executive terminal on the other end of the airport.

To have a little fun, they grabbed one of the "newbies" and told him that the Secret Service called and asked for a tug for AF1, and pointed out what direction to drive.

Needless to say, the prank got out of hand; HP management had to come down and rescue the new ramper from the U.S. Secret Service, who had him face down on the tarmac, guns drawn.

George W. Bush comes into MSP periodically, particularly around election times to drum up support for Republican candidates in a largely-Democratic area. AF1 always lands on 12L/30R at MSP. Before they come in, police cars get lined up at various places around the airport perimeter, a MN State Patrol chopper runs around the airport (and often stares at the ramp agents), some Air National Guard F18's run around the airport, all the traffic gets held, and in comes AF1. They always use 12L/30R as that is closest to the Air National Guard base, where they park AF1. Quite a bird. I hear it costs roughly $40000/hr to operate. What a great use of our tax dollars to drum up partisan political support. I don't care whose party it is or whether I support the president's ideas or not, it is just a huge waste to gallivant around the world in a private jet the size of a building in order to support ANY political party on taxpayer money.

As it was landing on Runway 1R at MCI. I was watching from the ramp at gate 18 (Terminal A), so I didn't have a great view of it. It was still on the ramp at TWA when I left work a few hours later, though. One of the largest airplanes we see at MCI (except when NWA does touch-and-goes with the 744s).

I watched it land and take off from Moffitt Field just last week (or was it 2 weeks ago already?). Very impressive indeed. I've seen Marine 1 a couple of times as well. That thing is amazing to watch.

"Air National Guard F18's"

?..

You mean F-16s or F-15s right, the Air National Guard does not fly those Navy/Marine Corps jets.

I saw AF-1 landing at EWR back in '99, bringing President Clinton into town for some speeches.

Since 9-11 AF-1 usually lands at McGuire AFB in Central Jersey when President Bush comes to the NYC area.

When President Bush went to the WTC site to meet with recovery workers on 9-14 security was TIGHT. He landed at McGuire AFB where he was met by Mayor Giulianni and Governor Pataki who flew helicopters out to greet the President.

A bunch of different helicopters then flew the 40-45 miles from McGuire AFB to the Westside heliport, and then drove down the Joe Dimmagio West Side Drive to the World Trade Center recovery site.

I've often seen two Marine Corps 1 helios flying in formation with two Marine Corps Chinooks prior to a Presidential visit to the area, they fly right over my house.

I got a walk through tour in 1988(?) on the Presidential 707 at NAS Moffatt, CA. I was killing time at Base Ops waiting on a broken airplane. The building was crawling with Secret Service agents and we just asked for a tour. "Ask and ye shall receive." The agent just looked at our Navy IDs and gave us a front to back tour. It was very cool.

I have seen AF-1 in person as well. It was a few years back when President Clinton was in KY, and it was parked at LEX. There are a few advantages to a small airport and one of those advantages is that planes are often parked very close to the road. That was the case with AF-1, it was great to see it that close. I went by IND this morning on my way to work, hoping to see it again today, but it was not to be.

By the way, when I went by IND this morning, there was an European charter airlines 747 parked there, does anyone know why this plane was in IND?

Seen it many times up close at MSY. Both the 747 since it was introduced, and the 707 while GHB was president.

There is no AF2...at least not one which the president flies. Any time the president steps onto an air force plane it becomes AF-1....same with the army (Army-1) and his helicopter (Marine-1). But yes there are two VC-25s...

I had to dump the lavs on Air Force One at Los Alamitos when Bush came in there last year. I was patted down and then after dumping AF 1, I had to do 3 G-III's, 1 C-130 and Air Force 2. Pretty cool!

Well I'm just in the mood to nitpick I guess, but unless the POTUS is on board, the aircraft is not Air Force One. Even if he deplaned 2 minutes before and will reboard in 15 minutes. So, unless he is on board the aircraft, you cannot see "Air Force One."

If one were to mention all aircraft that have been AF1, I've seen them all but only 1 VC-25 and 1 VC-137 while carrying a president.

A degree of humor must be employed while reading the above.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I saw Air Force One approach North Island Naval Air Station on Coronado Island back in 1996. It flew out over Point Loma, then did a large loop to make the approach typical of naval aircraft flying into NINAS. I stood on the beach and watched the huge 747-200 swoop in majestically over the beach and land, hearing its engines reverse after touchdown. After awhile, the presidential motorcade came down Ocean Boulevard, and I caught a glimpse of President Clinton inside the presidential limousine. Excellent night that was!

Pardon, late at night, not thinking... F-16.

I believe that when the President travels for strictly political reasons like this, his political party's campaign committee foots the bill for AF1's use.

See, what he always does is he throws in some little non-partisan side thing into the trip. Then it is not technically considered a partisan political campaign trip. So we all end up footing the bill for it whether we support it or not.

Seen AF1 twice...both times at GRR and with both George Bush SR and George Bush JR...quite a sight seeing not only AF1 land but also all the support aircraft that arrive in with him. I was working the day and days before GW came to GRR in '03 and there was a constant parade of Secret Service and all the support staff...i have never seen security so tight before. I would like to hear from any C8 Mechanics at the SBN Base when GW showed up in the hanger for a speech.

I saw it (OK, the plane which had been and would be again "Air Force One" after GWB's return from the ranch on board Marine One), from directly above, as I flew over TSTC (KCNW) in an Archer while the Prez was at the Crawford Ranch. I was at 5,500 MSL.

I was, of course, operating under an active flight plan, squawking a discrete transponder code and in constant contact with ATC.

No big deal, but still very cool to fly over the big bird.

I got to see Air Force One in Hyderabad, India in 1999 when Mr. Clinton came to India. It was one of the shortest runways AF1 has ever landed and taken-off from. I am not sure on the distance the runway is but it barely made it on take-off. The runway was so short for it that Bill Clinton could not land in Hyderabad with the 747 he had to land with a smaller jet.

Yes, I went out to photograph it last September, but there are NO good spots to photograph at Buckley AFB here in CO. I did get a half-assed shot of both AF1 and 2, but that's nothing worthy of mentioning. I've seen a Presidential C-5 go to DEN at one point as well.

Jeff Miller got much better shots of it than I did.

Seen it twice. Once at SWF in Newburgh, NY when President Clinton came to Hyde Park for a summit meeting. The second time was at Shannon Airport in Ireland when he came for a series of meetings in both Ireland and Northern Ireland. Both planes were on the ground at the same time, parked tail to tail. I tried submitting the photo, but it was rejected because it wasn't clear enough.

Ok this might tell my age but I remember seeing Air Force One come to DFW back in the early 80's when President Reagan was in office. I was down on the south employee parking lots and got a great shot's of the 707 landing. It taxied over to the Delta hanger on the east side of DFW. I drove over to the east loop road and watched the motorcade drive by. Got a picture of him also. It was really cool !!!

I saw it at LHR sometime last year. It was parked right out by the threshold of 09L on one of the 160 stands with one of the 757's parked right behind. I liked the internal stairs that come out from the belly. How handy that would be on a regular 747, but I guess AF1 doesn't carry all that much freight !!.

I drove over to have a closer look, but kept my distance so as not to freak out the SS guys.

I watched a program on Discovery about AF1 and it said that it can stay airborne for 7 days without landing. The only reason that it can't stay airborne for longer is due to the oil in the engines getting low and the waste tanks would more than likely be full by then !!.

That would be pretty cool to stay airborne for 7 days - might have a bad case of DVT though, but I wouldn't like to be around to see the circumstances that would require it to be in the air for that long - if you know what I mean........BOOM !!.

While it's not the traditional 747, I went to MHT last October to see the 757 varient, after I worked at a Rally that President Bush appeared at (the perks of being a loyal Republican and having a connection in the White House).

I have actually seen a safety card from the 747 Air Force One...nicest Safety Card I've ever seen. It even puts the Concorde's to shame.

Ever See Air Force One

Fri May 16, 2003 11:50 am

Yes, I seen it twice...

The first time was in Spring 2000 it landed at YIP near Detroit. I saw it from a distance at my house. The only other 747s to fly into YIP were Kalitta 747s and at that time Kalitta was not operating.

The second time was late summer 2000.

Clinton flew into YIP and Air Force 1 passed over my head where I was working at about 2000 feet, followed 1/2 hour later by Air Force 2 carrying Al Gore (the 757). Gore was campaigning in Detroit and Clinton was with him... an hour later the motorcade passed by.

Not only saw it, but waved it in last year when it came to Calgary for the G-8 summit, along with a few other dignitaries aircraft. Quite the feeling to say the least.

RE: Ever See Air Force One In Person?

Yep!
Saw it in 1997 when president Clinton visited our country.

Both VC-25A's were at AMS airport. At the time, runway 06/24 was closed for maintenance. It arrived at approx 19.30 and nobody knew what runway it would land. The wind conditions dictated either 01L or 01R. A bunch of spotters parked their car at a convenient place somewhere midpoint between both runways.

Only until AF1 hit the approch frequency it became clear that it would be 01R. You should have seen al those cars racing for 01R to get the best shot! A traffic jam moving at 100 km/h! Hundreds and hundreds of spotters turned out to snap this bird. Got some nice pics myself, but unfortunately I don't have any equipment to get them into digital format.
