A Last Look At Sabena A340...

Thu May 15, 2003 6:55 am

For those of you who want to get all nostalgic, you can have a last look at one of Sabena's A340s ex OO-SCY at FRA (have all others found new operators?).
The aircraft is currently stored in the far northwest corner near the two Khalifa 777s.

Thanks for the pictures Konstantin!

Björn already showed me the plane a few weeks ago but we couldn`t see much from the LH parking garage because an A 330 was parked right in front of the SN 340.

Is there actually any need to add the SN A340's to the fleet given the present climate? The A340-200's and the two 747-200's leaving the fleet must be a very welcome cost cutting measure which is partly eaten up again by the new A340's entering the fleet.

Hi!

That's really a great shot. I will ever remember SABENA since my childhood when I used to see their planes at LIS airport. Caravelles, the 727-100, the 707-300 and 300B flying from BRU to Casablanca via Lisbon!!!! Then the 737-200, my first DC-10 ever seen at LIS was actually a Sabena one that came from South America and maded a tech-stop there! Later the A310-200 and 300 too, the 737-300, 400 and 500's and finally the A319, 320, 321's! The last sight I have from a Sabena plane was actually with full Sabena livery and german registration, I think it belonged to Aero LLoyd and that was in Faro!

@ Godbless:

With those two A343's manufactured in summer 1994, I assume Lufthansa managed some very good leasing conditions. Moreover Sabena has had many problems with those two if I remeber well. Maybe Spitfire can confirm on this.
All I know is that Airbus & ILFC wanted to get rid of those two airplanes as fast as possible.

Which routes will they fly ???

BTW: an other ex-SABENA airplane (and also ex-VG/Delsey) now opearting for MAS

One can only look back and remember the days when we could see all those SN heavies every now and then coming in... Too bad they are gone though, I kind of miss them.

I think if they could get it back to BRU, just for one day, people would be willing to pay big bucks to get a final ride with this beauty, or just even being allowed to pay this baby a little visit / take pics of it (yeah, that would be me  Wink/being sarcastic ).

We sure miss them!

Fly-K - Konstantin - Very nice pictures. It really does bring back the memories. So often I have flown on that aircraft.

Flying Belgian - The problems (if you can call it that) were on the A340-200 aircraft, not the 300's. Wanting to get rid of the aircraft was in the last weeks of Sabena's existence to get a uniform long haul fleet. Tokyo was also abandoned near the end to speed up this process but we all know it had nothing to do with the performance of the specific aircraft in question.

That's right A330DAT, the problems we encountered on the A340-200 in the beginning were mostly due to unexpermented ground technicians and also flight crews. It seems that a lot of information coming from Airbus Industries and Air France ( the planes were used for many years by Air France)were missing when the two A/c arrived finaly to Sabena. The gear problem (crash landing in BRU) was due to the "lightness" of his construction combined with our "famous" 180° turns on the runways in Africa.

Anyway many thank to Konstantin for the beautifull pictures ...I'm sad, so sad  Crying

THX for the info A330DAt & Spitfire. I wasn't aware the A342 was the type involved in the problems I heard about Sabena A340's.

I'm really glad that you enjoyed the photos!  Smile
D-AIMG is mostly used on the FRA-CCS service and as a backup the rest of the week. I don't know yet where the second one will be used.
