Which Aircraft Will AC Ground?

Thu May 15, 2003 11:04 am

My apologies if this is too soon to tell, but I wonder which planes Air Canada is going to ground as a part of its restructuring efforts?

It's already known that Air Canada has plans to ground about 40 planes.

I can imagine the 744 and maybe a few A340s or A330s for they're higher capacity a/c, but what about the A319/320/321? And the 767-200/300 fleet?

I also understand that AC owns only about 4-5% of its fleet, so will AC simply take any leased planes it wants to stop flying to their lessors? What about the three French A321s? (C-GKOH, C-GKOI, C-GKOJ)

Expect the 762's to be gone fairly shortly. All of them are quite old, and the 321 has replaced their role for providing additional capacity on North Amerian routes. The 763 fleet may be reduced a bit, but they are too valuable to Air Canada in that they fulfill many roles for the airline. The recent press release also stated that Jazz's fleet was going to be reduced, and someone mentioned that there are rumours of YYZ having no Dash 8-300 routes in the future, so possibly the 50-seater Dash 8 will be used more sparingly.

That would make sense, Spyderz. But AC might retain a few 762s, provided they're the younger ones and are -ER's, so it can still run transatlantic routes while cutting capacity. Obviuosly, while the A321 is good for replacing the 762 on short to medium haul routes within North America, it still cannot replace the 767-200ER for the range.

Now, another a/c type I forgot to ask about is the 737-200. Ironically, AC including Jetz, Zip and Tango has more 732s than WestJet! Or until very recently at least. I won't be surprised if the 732 is the next aircraft type in AC's fleet to go the way of the Fokker F28 and the DC-9. AC may have Zip go all-A319. In fact, it's rumored to be headed that way.

The remaining mainline 732's will go pretty fast, plus some more newer planes near major checks.

I was always asking myself why AC as a "first row" carrier kept those old noisy 737-200s when all other big airlines outside the US dumped them in the mid Nineties already.

Na,

You must understand that AC acquired those 732s when it merged with Canadian (CP) after CP declared bankruptcy back in 2000. So most if not all 732s were originally from CP.

BTW, I believe Delta and Southwest actually still have quite a few 732s left. And so does Ryanair, too.

Samurai's right- Delta is bringing some 737-200s over from the old Delta Express fleet & putting them in on mainline routes. I think they may have parked some of them, but brought a lot back to mainline. AFAIK, WN still runs them out of DAL.
