Your First Upgrade

Fri May 16, 2003 3:45 am

What were the circustances of you first upgrade ever?

I was 11 years old when my father and I took a trip around Europe. Our itinerary was:

Year, 1982. (Not sure if Milan was MXP or something else then).

When we got to Logan, the line was stretching out the door of terminal E. My father went to the empty business class line and asked if it would be ok to check in there. The agent said, "Because you asked so nicely, we will upgrade you to Club World."

(Not sure what ticket fare we had).

The ride was great. It was my first trip across the pond, and I enjoyed the service tremendously. Remember those packs of mini sized playing cards BA used to give out? Got a couple of sets of those.

Since then, I've flown C and F plenty. But the first time was the sweetest.

What are some of the other memories of first time upgrades?

Mine was unexpected for me. I was doing CO lim-ewr-cdg; got upgraded on the lim-ewr segment because of my recently upgraded elite status (or so I was told)

My first upgrade was on this flight (copied from my flight log):
25MAY01 G???? STNHAM LH4697 146 C
My girlfriend and I got to STN really late, like 20 minutes before departure, but the nice lady said: "that's fine, we'll put you in business". I must have had such a big smile on my face! That was so good after the hassle of getting to the airport and nearly missing the flight!
Flown Business only within Europe, but it has always been a nice and special experience to sit in front of the curtain! Big grin

At the moment I can only think of FRA-MEX on a LH 744 and FRA-ARN on a LH 733.

Unofficial: Flying from ATL-CLT on USAir and a flight attendent asked me If I would like to move up a couple rows into first class...I delcined (You F#%king idiot  Pissed ) I was about 10-11 yrs old at the time.

Official: Flying from LYS-JFK on DL, I went to check in and they upgraded me at the counter. took back my ticket and put it in a Business Elite ticket sleeve. I got to board along the elite carpet and got all the regular pampering on board for 8 hours to JFK.

I still can't understand why they would upgrade a passenger on the spot like that for no apparent reason...any suggestions??

If it was an oversell, you got upgraded on the spot because there was a need to upgrade pax and you fit their criteria.

You were probably dressed OK and had no special requirements.

Airlines will never upgrade unless they can cater for you (and still give a selection to the paying pax) so if you want a special meal you'll get it back in econmy as requested!!

My fisrt upgrade was from my lovely wife in the situation I had outlined above. She was doing the upgrades and I fit her criteria!!

I don't know if this really counts since I'm an airline employee, but being there just a year I only have a regular M (Y) priority, but I got upgraded to Club World and then Club Europe on a recent trip to Paris, even though I technically supposed to be taking whatever seat in the back that I can get. So, that was nice.

My first upgrade was on KLM, FBU-AMS in 1993 since Y was overbooked. But there's nothing special since the food is the same as the Y class, only the seat was bigger.

My second and last upgrade was on February 2002, on Emirates, CGK-SIN. I arrived pretty early in the airport, but the check in queue for Y class was very long. So I went to the J class check in counter and asked the lady, "I con't have any checked luggage, can I check in here?" She politely checked me in, without telling me about the upgrade. I didn't find out about the upgrade until I looked at the boarding pass just before I enter the waiting room at the gate. When I realized that I was upgraded, I changed my heading to the lounge instead Big grin

1985, SAS SK 972 from Singapore to Bangkok. My entire family got upgraded to Business Class! I remember clearly how the footrests were mounted on the seat in from of me... and I have never seen a foot rest before that! Cool! Plus the meal was served on real plates and not the rectangular trays.

My first time in Business Class at the age of 11 and I got hooked...

Dec 24th, I was checking in at MAN through to HKG via LHR, i'd already booked for World Traveller Plus on BA025.

I'd already checked in online as I'm a BA exec member, but was unsure where my girlfriend would be sat! As I asked "will we be sat 31A/B?", the reply came "no you'll be 16A/B, I've upgraded you to J class"

Nice early Christmas present from BA!

I had the chance of an upgrade for UA69 LAX-HNL in 2000. But my mum didn't want it(god knows why).

I was flying AUS-PDX on CO in 1996 and was upgraded from IAH to LAS. Reason being, when we were coming out of Austin, our MD-80 had ingested a bird on landing. That caused us to be 45 minutes late leaving. We arrived at IAH at 7:52 but our PDX departure was at 8. THEY REFUSED TO HOLD THE PDX PLANE. I sprinted down to the PDX gate only to see the plane pushing back. I was non-plussed to say the least. We got re-routed through LAS instead of a non-stop IAH-PDX flight. I got upgraded to first class on the IAH-LAS leg, after I threw a fit at the counter.

I've only ever had two in my whole life and both were just by chance without asking.
In 1978 I flew Sydney to Melbourne with Ansett and I was using a standby ticket. The aircraft was already boarded and quite full and usually they called standby's individually by name to fill any or all vacant seats. On this one occasion they called all standby ticket holders and sent them to the gate for seat allocation, and I was last in line. The aircraft was full and the guy in front of me and Myself were given 1st class upgrades instead of being sent back for the next flight. That was my only time ever in First class and it was pretty nice up there even if it was only an hours flight, I remember the incredible amount and quality of the food most of all.
The other upgrade I had was far more recent in June 2001 returning from Amsterdam on my way home. I was flying Kuwait which I like a lot and have flown many times. The flight originates in ORD and as such is usually with a fair load before arriving at AMS on it's way to KWI. On this occasion there were perhaps just 20 new passengers to join the flight at AMS but this time they ran out of seats and 5 of us were given business class seats and one really lucky bastard got a first class seat. This was possibly the nicest flight I ever had with Kuwait and I appreciated the extra service and IFE system and the food was excellent.

I remember when the DC-3 was new!

My first was flying from TUS to RDU in July 1971 on TW and DL via ORD. I forgot my ticket at home and was a bit late to the airport. Like this late, my sister was driving me and we were 20 minutes from home when I realized it and 45 minutes from scheduled departure. I got home and back to the airport with 2 minutes to spare and, as the only seat left was in first class so thats where I was put. Still have a bit of a crush on the older woman that I was seated next to that day.

The second was the return to TUS in June of 1972.

I flew from RDU to DCA to go to Transpo '72 at IAD on June 6th. After spending the night at DCA, I boarded a NW flight to PIT to see my father while enroute home to Tucson. The flight left at 0600 or so and only 7 people showed up out of the 60 expected. Weight and balance and already been figured so all 6 of us coach passengers were put in first class.

I was all of 14 and 15 years old when these happened.
