LHR Spotting

Fri May 16, 2003 3:02 pm

Since the deck is closed, where is it better to spot from airside ... terminal 3 or terminal 1. What about coming out of the terminal and using one of the parking lots ?

I'm coming into Terminal 3 (UAL ) @ 7:30 am and out of terminal 1 ( BMI ) @ 11:15 am

How much can you "wander" around the terminals airside.

Why is the LHR deck closed and the LGW one open ?

Can anyone of the LHR spotters confirm that the deck itself (so the above platform) is closed, but that you can still stand under the 'real' deck behind the glass?

The entire spectators gallery area is closed until further notice, even the shop next to it seems to have gone.

Why is the LHR deck closed and the LGW one open ?

Good question, i have no idea, LHR had a 'credible' terrorist threat 2 months ago when the army was sent in, which might explain the extra security procedures at LHR more than LGW.

As for looking around, both T1 and T3 will be crowded at that time, but airside it shouldn't be conjested that much with only ticketed pax. T3 airside is my favourite, great views of both parallel runways and all the widebody's at their stands.

I flew out of LHR the day after they pulled out the army, and it was chaos in T2 the queue to get in to departures was a nightmare so I don't blame them for clossing the deck and I wish people would stop asking this it will most probably not open until after the war on terror or until the threat of terroism has gone down.
As for spotting I would take the Heathrow Express to Hatton Cross and go to myrtle Ave if you have time.  Smile

I seem to recall BAA stating that the Queens Building spectator area would be reopened if they had the staff to man it.

Don't hold your breath boys, that means it will be an age (if at all) before you get to use this facility. BAA are not going to employ/redeploy staff just so plane spotters can watch aircraft.

The only alternative 'official' viewing area is the Visitor Centre. Good views if landing and taking off from 27R, apart from that not much use at all.

I recommend the 'Pink Elephant' car park - expensive parking but great views of the runway!!

If you are transitting thru, there's a really good place in the Flight Connection Centre bewteen T1 and T2. It's connected with both and you can take a bus directly from T3 to get there. You have a great view of T4 and the southern runway.

The Visitors Centre is also good for departures/landings on the north runway. To get there from the terminals, take a bus from the central bus terminal. The bus there is free but ask which one is that stops there.
