Jet Blue JFK-IAD?

Sat May 17, 2003 6:39 am

Why doesn't Jet Blue fly between IAD-JFK? They could wipe out the competition. Couldn't they?

I think that JetBlue is not looking to connect all the dots right now, and serves IAD with the long haul flights.

First question is "what competition?" United Express/ACA has a half-dozen or so Junkstreams between JFK and IAD, and that's about it. Given the travel time to/from both JFK and IAD and security delays, you might as well take Amtrak; LGA-DCA isn't a whole lot faster than the train as it is.

jetBlue's model doesn't seem to be optimized for short-haul flying; the vast majority of their routes are over 1000 miles.

True, but....
If there was a JFK-IAD flight it would be like any other hub-hub connection. It would be a feeder. Granted that currently there would be some triple connections, but it would open up some more options for travelers. Like a passenger could choose ROC-JFK-IAD-LGB.
Seems like a wise idea...we'll see. Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Well I would rather just go ROC-JFK-LGB and skip the IAD segment. LGB and JFK are the hubs here and not IAD.

As others have alluded to, there's no great demand for JFK-IAD. If you want to get from NYC to DC by air, the assumption is that you want to save time, and thus, you want to go LGA-DCA. Otherwise, it becomes a half-day affair, and you should just take the train.

Multiple connections are expensive for airlines and inconvenient for passengers; it makes little sense to schedule someone that way unless there's no conceivable alternative. Hub-hub flights are strong for airlines because (1) the airline has a high market share in both hub cities and (2) they're effective at getting passengers from one hub to a city served only by the other hub.

Low-cost carriers make most of their profits on non-stop point-to-point service; JFK-IAD really only adds service from IAD to BUF/ROC/SYR/BTV as an option.

There is a huge market for suburban DC travel to New York. DC is not like many cities, large quantities of businesspeople live 30 miles away in suburban VA, and a drive to DCA in the morning is prohibitive.

Yes, but those "large quantities of businesspeople" want to fly to LGA, not JFK; the drive from JFK to Manhattan in the morning isn't a treat, either.

JFK-IAD does not work because both airports are step childs, driving and Amtrak are actually faster then schepping out to JFK or 27 miles out to IAD.

The LGA-DCA Shuttles are hurting, who's going to go out to JFK to fly to Dulles. The cheap fares don't comapre with driving or taking Amtrak's NEC trains.
