46 Aircraft Cleaners At Alaska Get The Pink Slip

Sat May 17, 2003 4:35 pm

Alaska Airlines is going to eliminate 67 employees out of their fleet service department.

These are the guys and gals that clean the aircraft and do the biffy and lav services.

46 are expected to get their pink slips soon.

11 of those who will be losing their jobs are from the ANC station, 35 from the Seattle station. The remainder will hopefully come from other stations losses due to normal attrition.

The reductions were done to eliminate unnecessary positions; the flight attendants' contract requires them to do light cleaning of the aircraft between flights (grabbing newspapers, wrappers, etc).

Rather than paying extra fleet service people to do this function, the flight attendants will be handling this duty, with the heavy cleaning of lavatories, sweeping, and the like being done by a smaller fleet service crew (two per plane instead of four or five).
