US Laptop Power Ports On Airbuses...

Tue May 20, 2003 9:54 am

Hello...

I was wondering if anyone knew what type of power adaptor to get for a laptop so that it will be compatible with the in seat ports on US Airways' Airbus fleet?

Thanks,

Its the standard Empower plug. Targus, for example, makes a variety of adaptors for it.

I feel like I paid less than that for mine at Best Buy... but it was a while back I may just not remember clearly.

If you're a fortunate one and have an Apple iBook or PowerBook G4, the laptop's internal power supply operates at the same cycle and voltage as the Empower connector natively - all you need is a cheap piece of wire you get from VST.

Trying buying direct from Dell. I have a gateway laptop. I purchased an auto/air adapter direct from Gateway for around $75. On American the power port I plugged into didn't require a special adapter or the empower adapter, just a straight cigarette lighter adapter like used in a car. Never flown US airways but it could be the same.

you might want to invest in an extra battery, instead. it's about the same price, and can be used a lot more than a special power cord.

i just switched from a dell latitude to an ibm thinkpad... i hope i never go back to dell

All Dell laptops made in the past however long use the same connector. They all should be compatible.

Hmm...I just switched from IBM to Dell Latitude and I hope I never go back to IBM. I use a Targus adapter on USAir's Airbus and it cost about $119 at Best Buy. Mine offered me a free connector if one was made and wasn't included in the package.

Find the part number from one of the official sites, then go and buy it on ebay. Mine was 120 bucks in Best Buy and 40 on Ebay, well worth the savings

Before I bought the adapter I'd also think about Valence's Ncharge system:

http://www.valence.com/ncharge.asp

It'll give you up to 10 hours additional power and is small enough to just go and sit in the seatback pouch with just a cord over to your laptop.

That plus your one battery should let you watch a good three movies without recharging...
