No immediate plans for a frequency upgrade although do expect extra flights over the course of the summer to cater for the tourist demand. The 773 is due to be downgraded again to 772 effective 1 October so you may get additional frequencies then, subject to acft availability. I think by next year KUL
frequencies will likely increase again regardless as the route is showing good growth in pax and cargo year round.
Emirates want to fly to AKL
today as an extension of their SYD
service, but the Australian govt. won't grant them the traffic rights. Sheilkh Ahmed ibn Saeed Al Maktoum, the Emirates Chairman, went to Australia a few weeks ago to press for greater access into Australia as well as access to trans Tasman services. Going into the meeting he wasn't very hopeful of getting any joy on the latter.
I doubt they will operate a dedicated A340-500 service to AKL
. As it is the A340-500 will be an expensive aircraft to operate and routes where it is likely to enter service on eg. Sydney and Osaka will see their average fares go up.
The destinations you've mentioned are part of the long-term plans but i don't see them being added anytime in the next couple of years. European routes that are likely to take greater priority include Madrid, Barcelona, Amsterdam, Geneva, Glasgow, Dublin.
Yes loads have dropped substantially largely due to SARS. The situation is compounded by the fact that it is also a seasonally slower time of the year. Also they cannot downgrade to 772 because these acft are needed to operate the long-range routes like PER
etc. The 773 would be placed on these routes but they don't have the range unless they take a payload penalty. This is partly why Emirates will order B777-300ERs -- to provide the capacity and range on routes like these.
