Apparently, one of the group was on a Saudi "dangerous persons" list and was arrested at the airport. So it would seem that they were about to do this when they were caught.

How successful they would have been is another issue; SV has armed guards on its flights and a series of sharp manoeuvres by the flight crew would have helped to knock them off their feet. The point is, even if they had attempted something like this, they would more than likely have failed. People know that in a hijack situation, the hijacker is now more likely to want to kill everyone, so they will be resisted.

Incidentally, the route apparently targeted was Khartoum, to which SV flies AB6s.

As for the three people involved, they may find themselves in a village square after prayers some Friday soon, for a haircut. "Something off the shoulder, sir?"

No surprise, sadly.
Anyone who thinks that BA are being excessive in cancelling flights to Kenya, think again, I'm not going to pass on what a friend elsewhere in BA told me in confidence, but in recent months this method of attempted attack has not gone away, despite new cockpit doors, (and if they were somehow able to barge past a FA entering the cockpit, then shut the door, then the security of the new doors would work in favour of the terrorists).

No surprise. There are not many ways how to harm the whole western world with a single attack. The NY attack worked far better than expected, no wonder other creeps try to do it again. Its so photogenic.
Btw, after these bastards get their "haircut", why not feed their remains to the pigs? And before, give them only beer to drink and ham to eat. Thats what muslim terrorists will understand. Oh well, that´s nasty...

Osama's No2, Al Zawahiri, has called for attacks on Britain, the US, Australia and Norway.

NORWAY!

What has Norway done to offend anyone? Is it because their troops are involved in peacekeeping in Afghanistan?

However, it looks as if they are planning something. We can only hope that whatever they are saying, doing and planning is being intercepted.

I really wonder what the whole idea would be of an attack on central Jeddah, as these three hijackers planned (they were actually Moroccans). Surely, this would only serve to turn the whole of the Arab world against them?

Yes, members of the Arab nation it would appear, are legitimate targets too - no one is spared. This depresses me...

...NORWAY!

Yes this is possible. Could be that it is linked to Mullah Krekar who was arrested in Oslo earlier this year. More background surf the net (not of interest on an aviation forum).

According to Danish News tonight, the well educated and knowledgeable Al Queda network has apparently mixed up Norway with Denmark. Norway is not part of the coalition against Iraq, but Denmark is. South Iraq will be under Danish administration. About 400 troops going down to work with the British Desert Rats. Doesn't sound like a big deal, but considering the fact that the Danish peacetime army, all included, is 15000, with 1200 deployed in the Balkans, Afghanistan, Kirgisistan, Kuwait, Pakistan/India, Israel/Palestine and elsewhere..... Just try to calculate the percentage deployed overseas!!

Not that many Americans really know or knew that, so why should Al Queda? Most common questions from Americans: Denmark.... That's in Germany right? Or Denmark, that's the capitol of Stockholm right?

Sorry, got a bit nationalistic there.......

Anyway, having lived in Jeddah, glad I'm not there now. Thing are getting a bit tense!!

No mistake, it was Norway, for nicking that Al-Queda creep.

As cruel as this may sound, it's GREAT that al Qaeda is actively targeting Arab nations as well, especially Saudi Arabia. Not because I want to see anyone hurt, though...just the opposite!

Since 9/11, many countries have only paid lip service to the problem, and have only grudgingly participated in counterterrorism activites. These countries viewed al Qaeda as everyone else's problem, since they hadn't been hit.

Hopefully now the Saudi government will realize we're ALL in this together, and that it takes a full, concerted effort by everyone to eradicate these morally bankrupt fanatics. Unless they become more willing participants in the war on terrorism, both Arab and non-Arab countries will suffer.  Sad

Implying that all countries should have helped the USA attack Iraq?

Nice try, but sorry...that's not where I was going with this. Of course I think you knew that anyway and just wanted to be a smartass, but whatever floats your boat.  Insane

No, the "they" I was referring to are the Saudis. They have been very reluctant to acknowledge that their own failed internal policies have allowed and even encouraged the fanaticism that breeds terrorism. They've been slow to go after their own people who aid these organizations, and have turned a blind eye to the problem.

Now that the Saudis themselves are becoming victims, they may start to realize how serious the problem has become and take action.

There is no PROOF anywhere these Moroccan men were planning to use the Saudi Arabian Airlines aircraft as a suicide bomb. The Saudi authorities have already publicly stated this.

In fact, from the Al Qaeda perspective, I wonder what would crashing this a/c into a Jeddah skyscraper accomplish??? Only one thing as one pointed out, erosion of Arab-public sympathy.

Nor was there for the 911 attacks until after the fact. I would suggest that history and common sense tells us that a handful of young arab men armed with knives, boarding a plane, with wills already made out doesn't look good. Even once they took over the cockpit, and started redirecting the aircraft from it's intended destination, and then killed the crew, even then there is no proof that they were going to fly it into a building. So, we have to wait until the plane actually hits the building before we can do anything to stop them ?
