Has Anyone Else Noticed This About TWA DC-9's?

Thu May 22, 2003 12:34 am

I have had this huge pet peev about the twin red striped (old colors) TWA
DC-9's that till this day drives me crazy when looking at pictures. I am just curious if I am the only one that has noticed that some of the DC-9-30 and almost all of the DC-9-50 aircraft have the tail TWA logo not aligned at all and completely offcenter. To me this looks horrible and not sure who TWA hired to have them painted like this but that has got to be the poorest workmanship I have seen. I just dont see how a professional aircraft painting company can make such an error that is so noticeable. I know this photo is very low quality but look at the difference between the tail of that parked DC-9 compared to the one directly behind it that is just pulling in. Notice how the parked ones tail logo is way to high and not centered in the red area while the one behind it is too low??!?!? ok I vented let me know if im crazy Smile/happy/getting dizzy

There's a similar pet peeve on this particular America West A320. The America West title is located too high in the fusalage.

Aren't the red tail markings aligned with the crown of the fuselage?

When OZ was merged into TW in 1986, each of the DC-9's received a quick livery change which painted the bottom green stripes red and covered the "swallows" on the tail with the TWA block.

Freshly painted -9's of the late '80's received the DC-9-80 delivery livery.

These were changed around 1988 to the tail designs shown above. I suspect that some of the "modified" tails ended up looking a little "off-center."
This plane is built to withstand anything... except a bad pilot.

I haven't noticed TWA DC-9's for over a year now. I have noticed a lot of AA MD-80's though.
