PIA To Start Cargo Operations From Luton

Thu May 22, 2003 6:51 pm

PIA are to start flying from Luton to Pakistan soon to accomplish the transportation of mango fruit. They are to sign a contract with cargo agents, to handle these operations. Aircraft said to be used is the 747.

In addition to the cargo service, 9 transatlantic flights will now stopover in Stansted, for the PAK-USA-CANADA routing from the 15th July 03.

This would mean a lower freq. from MAN of 5 weekly flights to Pak.
Bhx x4 weekly, 9x Lhr weekly.

PIA are waiting for the 777 to arrive, so that the PAk-US-Canada can be flown nonstop.

Isnt Luton's runway a bit small for a 747?

bhxforever, thats what i was thinking. Personally they should send it up to East Midlands Airport. Long runway, cheap handling charges and convenient (cant spell)

LTN has had a few 747s before. I'm just intrigued that they would be using 3 London airports for operations....not exactly the most economical use of resouces as they would presumably need to open sub-offices at both STN + LTN. Unless they plan to have one office only covering London?

It would also mean that both BHX + MAN could see an increase in "Eastern European" operations on 6th(?) freedom rights, plus it would also give the Qatar service at MAN a bit of a boost (if they get approval for more Pakistan services).

Would they have 5th freedom rights out of STN? Took them long enough to get them out of MAN (around a year).

Its quite difficult to understand. R they going to use LTN because they cant get the slots they require at LHR or STN or are we just looking at a bit of bad management.

Can LTN get a fully ladened 747 off the ground with their runway????? i cant really see it. there are only a few airports within the UK that can and they are LHR, LGW, STN, EMA and MAN (there may be more but cant think of any)

Cheers

LTN has had the odd 747 freight flight but I'd think they would be severely RTOW limited if they were going direct to Pakistan from there. Although seeing as they're transporting mango's they may all be going back empty?

PK does not have full freighters, they would use the 747 Combi's for the mango operation and this means they will also be transporting passengers to and from Luton. This reeks of bad management, and definitely something I did not expect at this point, when PIA actually seems to be doing well for a change.

Luton is being used as the operator is MNG on behalf of PK. Aircraft would obviously be the A300F. MAN and BHX are furiously rewriting their deals to PK for the tech-stops. Nothing is a done deal yet on these flights.

BDRules: Prestwick is also capable of full 747 operations.

PIA advertised the freighter service in the papers today, so its not going to be with their own aircraft, are the plans to convert the A300 into Freighters definite?
