Airline Livery Nicknames

Thu May 22, 2003 11:52 pm

What are some of the "nicknames" used to describe certain liveries?

Here are a few that come to mind:

Didn't the NATIONAL 'Sun King' logo have a nickname? Weren't the MOHAWK BAC1-11s called "Hawkers"?

Nobody could figure out exactly what the logo was, so they called it "Critter," which became the ValuJet callsign as well.

Pan Am's logo was known as the "Blue Ball".

National's old Sun King logo was known as (since NA flew most of their flights from NYC-FL) "The Sunburned Jew".

Southwest's new colors are "Beach Balls".

Someone mentioned Continental's "Brass Ass" livery. Their slogan was, at that time, "The Proud Bird with the Golden Tail" but it was more commonly known as "The Loose Goose with the Brass Ass".  Laugh out loud

Spirit's new "digital" livery - "Energize, Scotty!"

A C/P that I flew with quite often had a little girl that called the old Braniff green planes, "flying pickles".

Skyhawk,

MxCtrlr-in all the years I flew for National, not once did I ever hear our logo described as "Sunburned Jew". The name "Sun King" was reserved for our VIP room, that was not the name of our logo. Our logo was called a "Sunburst".

As you can see on the marquis in this 1960's-era advertisement (when National unveiled the Sun King logo/service) the service and the logo were referred to as "Sun King" (which is where the service and National airport lounges got their name from as well). The advertisement was taken from the National Sundowners' web site http://www.nationalsundowners.com.

The term "Sunburned Jew" make reference to the NYC-FLA service that National was best known for (since many people of Jewish descent flew from NY-FL during the winter months). This is also why South Florida was known for many years (and probably still is in some circles) as the "Southernmost borough of New York".

On another subject, when did you fly with NAL? My brother flew with them from 1977 until Pan Am's demise in 1991. Drop me an e-mail at my contact listed on my profile.

MxCtrlr-To answer your question first, I flew with National from 1971 until they were taken by Pan Am.

The logo I mentioned was our "wings" we received on graduation from training. We didn't get the usual wings that classes in the past had gotten, but just the Sunburst pin.

Believe me I know all about how many New Yorkers were in Miami, I was born and raised there. I don't know though about Miami being called the southern most borough-it certainly wasn't to us Miamians. We fairly dreaded the "season" when so many New Yorkers came down for the winter.
