Longest Flights On AA & CO 737NGs

Fri May 23, 2003 3:49 am

What are the longest flights operated by American Airlines & Continental Airlines Boeing 737NGs both within the U.S. and on international services? Many thanks for any replies.

CO uses 73G's on many transcon routes from EWR, ie LAX...I'd imagine those would be high on the list....no idea re: AA though...

I think AA flew SEA-MIA with a 738.

Does CO ever fly IAH-ANC with a 73x?

I would think Houston-Anchorage is out of range, I may be wrong though.

AA flies the 737-800 betwen Seattle-Boston
CO flies the 737-800 betwen Seattle-Newark

And as clickhappy said.......AA used to fly SEA-MIA with the 737-800.

Damm I would hate to be on a 737 on these long flights even if they are NG's.

CO uses the 737-800 on their "Pond Hopper" flights, from Honolulu-Guam via, Majuro, Kwajalein, Truk etc..

Also I think they fly Guam-Cairns with the 737-800.

SAN-BOS
SEA-BOS

I have taken AA's 737 from BOS to DFW and it is a very comfortable aircraft. Of course MRTC plus they have TV in above the aisles so you can watch a movie or sitcom.

I'd definitely rather be on a wide-body twin-aisle aircraft for transcon flights. But, after AA removes MRTC on the 757s, I'd prefer to fly the 738 over the 752. Actually, even now, I would prefer the 738 since the 752 still has the outdated seats.

AA *used* to fly the 738 on the SJC-JFK run... I guess it's been changed to a 757, though with the MRTC reductions I wouldn't be that surprised to see it switched back.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think AA flew SEA-MIA with 738's. It was flown with a 763, as an extension of the AA), Japan">NRT-SEA (flown first with MD-11's and later on with a 777-200) flight. Of course, the route no longer exists with AA.

I think up until last summer they flew SEA-MIA, after they cancelled the NRT flight. And I think I read here that they might start it up again, to compete with Alaska.

Many CO 737-800's operate trunk transcon routes from Newark to LAX, SFO, SAN, SEA, and PDX. The smaller 737-700 operates flights from EWR to West Coast destinations that include SNA and OAK (if they still fly the OAK route). CO uses the 737-800/700 into the Caribbean and Central America.

I believe the longest 737-NG route is operated by Copa Airlines, an affiliate of Continental Airlines, from Panama City to Buenos Aires. PrivatAir also flies 700 to EWR from DUS.

IAH to ANC is operated with a 757, as is the seasonal EWR-ANC flight, but the PDX-ANC extension operated at times by CO is flown with a 737-800.

My brother flew Copa 737NG from Panama City to Santiago Chile. I don't have a globe or atlas, what is furthur Bueno Aires or Santiago? I have a feeling whatever is furthur is not by much though since they are neighboring countries

While they're not as long as US transcons, Newark-Panama City, Guam-Sapporo, and Guam-Hong Kong are all over 2,000 miles and are, I believe, Continental's longest international flights with 738's.

I am curious why the original poster wanted to know this, and know it specifically for only those two airlines. I often see threads like this, and wonder why...

I have no idea why the thread was begun, but it's interesting to me, anyway.

Continental's almost-subsidiary COPA flies LAX-PTY, and PTY-EZE, both routes over 3,000 miles.

Artsyman, good question to my question! Should like to know how feasible a 737NG operaton would be from U.S. to Ireland. I am excluding the Privatair operated LH flight from DUS to EWR with the BBJ aircraft. What penalties would a 737-700 or -800 have heading into a strong wind heading west from Ireland to BOS or New York - would a technical stop for fuel be necessary? East bound from the U.S. should be less problematic. What are the prevailing winds like between Panama and Buenos Aires and Santiago with regard to the COPA 737NG operation?

Thanks Sam, while I am sure that the 737-700 and 800 could make the trip, I cant see them doing it. Continental does seem to try hard to match demand and capacity a little more than the others, but I don't see this happening

Sam, go to Boeing's website and check the tech specs for the 737NG family. As it happens, they show range circles centered on Boston for all models. Bottom line: Boeing says all models can make it from Boston to Ireland at stated gross weights.

So why doesn't Ryan fly to the US? Is that your real question?

Airways said that Copa Airlines longest flight and the longest flight on a 737NG is Panama-LAX, I may be wrong, but I read the Airways artifcle.

CO flies 73G's CLE-SFO and CLE-SJU. CO also flies a 739 CLE-LAS. I'm not sure what our longest 738 flight is. I know these don't qualify for longest flights, but I'm just giving another hub example.

No, not Ryanair. I am thinking into the not too distant future when at last the nuisance obligatory Shannon stopover for flights from Ireland to North America will end as soon as the European Commission takes over the negotiating rights for routes from the EU to America - I am hoping that my own city and airport of Cork will take her place as a gateway with direct flights to the U.S. and if not a 757 operation at least a 737NG by the likes of Continental? I await that day with eager anticipation!
