TSA Needs To Know My Marital Status?

Fri May 23, 2003 4:55 pm

Take a look at this TSA claim form for damage to luggage:

http://www.tsa.gov/interweb/assetlibrary/SF95_Claim_Form.pdf

Can someone think of a good reason why they are asking about marital status?

Best guess I would have is that this form is also used for "Injury or Death". They may be interested in next of kin information. I think it's pretty damming that they'd use the same form for pilfered luggage as they would for "death by TSA".

The TSA is the biggest joke in any form of security. I've spent enough time watching these clowns in action on my weekend shifts at KBUF, and it is truly scary.

LOL KROC, you can say that again, and again! TSA is the biggest joke in the world! The people that work at the TSA are the biggest bunch of idiots I've ever seen. I watch them all day as I work my shift here. Its funny as heck! I can't beleive the gov't is wasting it's money on these fools.

LOL!

Av8rPHX-your question about luggage being mentioned I would imagine be covered by the word "property" don't you think? Airlines are responsible for luggage that has been checked, I'm guessing but wouldn't this probably refer to baggage they are screening at security and they damage it there? What do you think?

I just can't stand how they walk through the airport like they (the individuals) are the big bosses. I don't know about any other agents here, but my biggest problem was some of the "think I'm so tuff" ones would interrupt my check-in conversation.

I recall once, the bag was 56 lbs., overweight by 6 lbs. No big deal, I advised the passenger nicely of two options, pay or remove the weight. The passenger (very nice) started to take some weight out.. bag was 54 lbs. And I said "Do you have any denim, books, or shoes that you can take out?" And I was going to cut her a break at 51 or 52, just trying to FOLLOW POLICY. HOWEVER, the TSA agent came up and said "Oh, com'on, just let her go, it's only four pounds." So, I looked at him, "Excuse me!" I picked up the phone and that right there got my supervisor steamed up!

I was ooposed to the creation of the TSA, but the legislators only created what popular opinion was espousing at the time...federalization of aiport security. Now that we got it....we'll have to live with it.

Back to the question at hand. My guess is that it's used as a profiling question. Anyone remember SOFTCAB? Seems kind of silly to me, if one were intent on breaching security measures, then one would be willing to lie about marital status.

T.S.A= thousands standing around. they are just a show for passengers to see as they come into airports but if you ask me airport security hasnt changed other than the fact the goverment is paying all these people a ridiculous amount of money to stand there and do what other companies were paying 7 dollars an hour to do before t.s.a. They all just stand around talking to each other and walking around airports like a bunch of bad asses.

Skyhawk, you are right,i missed that part  Smile. The funniest thing i have seen regarding the TSA was at PHX, i saw one of the guys walking thru the airport with plain blue epaulets on,does this signify a supervisor or the TSA just gone crazy?

Seems like TSA aren't the only ones playing a power trip. JMHO.

They just furloughed a bunch of TSA people here at KCLE, specifically the ones assigned to "sitting posts." Apparently TSA realized (and our Airport Director also affirmed) that having extra people sitting around the airport doesn't increase security that much.

Good riddance.

Like I said on another similar thread: don't get caught trying to enter the RNO employee parking lot when the TSA hordes are getting off duty-- it is like the 17-year locusts-- swarms of humanity. TSA is way overpaid and way underworked.

The biggest problem with the TSA is in my opinion when the government acted far too quickly, yes we need better security but we still dont have it. The government should have spent more time in the hiring and training then they did, I just read an article and I will try to find it that stated that some of the TSA agent still have not undergone background checks since the gov't officials were in such a hurry to take over.

O/T in regards to Phoenix:

If anyone works at Sky Harbor Terminal 4, do you remember the ancient woman with the Marlo Thomas 'That Girl' wig that sat at the Southwest security gates with her eyes closed and asleep a fair amount of the time?

It got to be a running joke with all our relatives...we'd make bets if she was there at the security checkpoint supposedly keeping anyone from re-entering the secure area.

Alas, with TSA I guess she was finally let go, because I never see her anymore when I travel to PHX.

In fact, I read that scores of these TSA folks have disqualifying criminal records. I learned of this when watching Tom Ridge on CSPAN giving testimony to the House Homeland Security Committee. Apparently, many private firms were contracted to do the background checks on the tens of thousands of screeners, which were done incorrectly.

Now the situation with them is may be worse (since they now actually have a little power).

HOw was your baggage damaged???? And the TSA was drafted up too quickly, but at least, in certain places, most of my experiences with them have been friendly.....unlike one horrible experience with a private security company at IAD. Anyway, I was at IAD, and I took a wrong turn to the baggage claim... I was young... and my parents were continuing through another hallway to international connection...I was off OS 93 from VIE headed for UA 7767 for BTV. Anyway, I waited.........and waited..................and waited........... and my mom didn't come. We were already missing our U N I T E D E X P R E S S flight due to a delay...and I was up for like 14 hours, or maybe even 16 without sleep....Finally, I find my dad and try to infiltrate the enterence, and this Chinese Lady starts yelling her lungs out at me, and she is extermely inpolite and not understanding of the situtation........They threatend to call the police.... Anyway, my dad...a lawyer, says "Call the police." but before then, my parents finally came through the exit.

A lot of attention is paid by TSA to passenger screening, for public relations purposes. Screening is the part of security that the public sees. But in my opinion, far too little attention is being paid to other airport vulnerabilities. Due to the sensitive nature of these things, I won't detail them on this board, but you all know what I'm talking about.
