Unable To Fly Over Algiers After Quake.

Fri May 23, 2003 7:29 pm

An Air Malta flight en route to Morocco was forced to return to base yesterday morning after it failed to receive a signal from the control tower in Algeria, probably as a result of an earthquake there.

The aircraft was entering Algerian air space about 40 minutes into its three-and-a-half hour flight when signals to the control tower in Algiers remained unanswered, a spokesman for Air Malta said.

As a safety measure, the captain decided to return to Malta.

Hi LMML 14/32

Yes that's correct....I was on nightshift and we heard from Eurocontrol that all Algerian airspace had been closed due to the earthquake so had to route the LHR-JNB/LOS flights via Libya instead. The airspace was planned to be closed all day Thur....not sure if it's back open yet.

Cheers

The BA flights to Johannesburg overfly Tunis FIR and rarely the Algerian air space.
Today i heard Tunisian controllers handing over flights to Algiers ATC,so the problem may have been resolved !!!

Might have been a result of the SITA links under the sea being damaged from the shock.
