TPA's Longest Runways Closed---for How Long?

Sat May 24, 2003 6:03 am

Since Monday, 18R-36L has been closed. This creates great photo opportunities for the other main runway 18L-36R. I was wondering if someone knows how long it'll be closed.

Redngold...

Depending on which way the wind is blowing, you'll either use 36R or 18L. What's interesting is that even when both runways are open, Southwest tries to use that runway as it's closer to their gates.

Of course, if there is a really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really strong easterly or westerly wind they'll put you on 9-27.

SWA.....

For what it's worth, I'll be flying out of TPA next Friday (30May), going to
Atlanta. I'd love to meet any aviation buffs out there.

well, considering that TPA's second longest runway is practically 3000ft shorter, one might wonder...

Well, during the week I have seen the BA777 lifting into the sky. I guess 8000ft is no problem. Actually, about 3 months ago, the tower put him on the 8000 when the 11000 was still open.

Rp tpa....

I am off Fridays. Figures.

Its no problem for any aircraft 18L/36R. I have seen AC 747 land and depart from it. Fed-Ex DC-10 does it daily. I have even seen a DL L-1011 land on runway 9/27. I promise its true. We had a tropical storm moving in or it was hanging around off the coast, I dont remember which but everything was landing on 9/27. It made for some interesting spotting!

Yes SWA TPA,

I remember one day in like March or April of last year, 2002, the had EVERYONE landing on rwy 9 coming in from the bay. I WAS AMAZED!!!!!! I had not seen that in some 20-25 years of spotting. Sadly, I haven't seen that again even though I've seen wind conditions warrant it. A few minutes ago, I just saw an American Eagle land on 27.

Kinda like runway 13/31 at PBI. Rarely ever used, unless strong wind or storm conditions merit. It probably could be used more often, but I think it's mostly a voluntary noise abatement policy, to appease the surrounding neighbors. Runway length is 6,930 feet, so it's not all that long, but I've seen L10s and 763s use it, no problem. PBI is normally kind of boring for spotting, but when 13 or 31 is in use, it sort of livens the place up a little!

TPA's Longest Runways Closed

Mon May 26, 2003 2:17 am

I was in Tampa a couple weeks back. I drove by TPA about 9pm and the main airliner traffic was landing on one of the 36s, but it looked like there was general aviation landing on 27.

I think aircraft landing on 9 would really make interesting spotting. Do they fly along the Courtney Campbell Causeway as they land?
