SoCal VFR Flight

Mon May 26, 2003 3:45 pm

I'm departing Van Nuys tomorrow for a VFR flight around the Los Angeles area. So far, our plan is to fly south over LAX and towards Long Beach. Does anyone have tips or advice about what to expect and what to see? This is my first time flying in the Los Angeles area. (I'm flying with a friend who has his PPL.) Thanks.

LAX airspace is very complicated. Know where you are and ask for help if needed.

Wow, you'll be flying in the world's busiest airspace. Just keep an eye out for heavies, and tell us how it goes.

Airworthy, we departing Van Nuys 16L and maintained 3500' over the LAX corridor. There's a special transition under the class Bravo airspace and the route is defined on the Los Angeles sectional. We tuned one of the radios to an LAX tower frequency to monitor departing and arriving traffic. We finally reached Long Beach and spent about 20 minutes doing various maneuvers (turns and stalls). On the return, we complied with restrictions and crossed LAX at 4500'. I saw a Delta aircraft land on the 25's with an Air Tahiti Nui A343 departing 25R. Next, we overflew UCLA and made a few circles. Finally, on our downwind to VNY, the tower informed us of traffic as an American M80 passed overhead on approach to BUR. (That was the most exciting part of the flight!) VNY was busy today so we were sequenced as #6 for 16R. The tower called our base leg and changed our clearance to 16L. Overall, it was an awesome flight with lots of traffic and smog!
