French Air Traffic Problems

Tue May 27, 2003 3:22 am

Hi

I'm reading reports that an ATC strike is planned for tomorrow (Tuesday) in France, and possibly on the 2 and 3 June too. Can anyone shed any light on why the controllers are striking?

thanks

Can anyone shed any light on why the controllers are striking?

It's related to (much-needed) pension reform, which unions are resisting.
A good summary:

Just one more question for anyone; further down the article explaining the strikes, Air France is reported to have given notice that 60% of short- and medium-haul flights would have to be cancelled.

But surely long-haul flights must avail of French air traffic control facilities, at least whilst flying over French airspace??

Yes that's correct. I work at VS and last week it was expected that overflights would be allowed, however a couple of our flights from Africa to the UK had to be routed to avoid French airspace when it was closed at the last minute. Fortunately the a/c involved had enough fuel and didn't require a tech stop.

Regardless of who's fault it is, it's the airlines and passengers that suffer so I hope they hurry up and sort it out.

Cheers

Let's just hope they will not go on with their strike on Wednedsday as well ! I have a LYS-ORY flight on Wednesday night, and I'd hate to be stranded in Lyon !!!

Absoultely, you should see some of the crazy routes we have to take to Spain and the Canary Islands on the days the French go on strike. Typical ACE flight will route West over South Wales, Southern Ireland, right out over the Atlantic before turning south towards Spain / Portugal.
