USA To Consider Lifting Foreign Ownership To 49%

Wed May 28, 2003 7:14 am

A proposal by the current U.S.A. administration to increase foreign ownership of U.S. airlines to 49% could help airlines get access to fresh capital.

Blah blah blah.

More information at the Financial Times website

I wonder if some airlines like Singapore Airlines Limited would buy into an airline. However, is 49% enough?

Big grin Big grin Big grin

How much do they own of Virgin Atlantic again?  Big grin

49% is a step in the right direction. 100% would be better... But 49% may well be enough to get Virgin American Blue off the ground...

What would this mean with regards to AA/BA, and perhaps LH/UAL?

that BA and LH would be insane to buy into their sickly alliance partners anyway and wouldn't go near those 49% of the shares with a bargepole?

It's amazing that US Airlines have made it this far without Government ownership (EVER!), the Europeans might as well buy them to keep selling Airbuses to them.

More WELFARE for Europeans.

Or exaclty the opposite. BA does buy AA (or LH buying UA) because the price is about as low as it will ever get. If BA can afford to take over Virgin of BMI then why not shares in AA. It's not as if Dubya will let UA or AA go bankrupt.

That, from a belated and incomplete attempt to liberalise (protectionist) airline ownership regulations in the USA? It's a very creative interpretation.

Given the state of the market at the moment, I don't think many foreign airlines will be interested in buying large stakes on a purely strategic basis. Nobody's willing to throw cash around at the moment (except Emirates!)

It doesn't have to be an airline buying a stake, of course, but let's not get into boring subjects  Wink/being sarcastic

Its about time we joined the world community and started reducing our psychotically protectionist policies.
