Has Your Favorite Aircraft Ever Changed?

Wed May 28, 2003 8:12 am

This is slightly unusual topic, so let me explain. Aside from the fact that some of y'all were old enough to remember when the 727 first flew, people's tastes change.

A few of my examples:

L-1011 over DC-10. It used to be I didn't care for the L-1011 whatsoever. I was a DC-10 man through and through (okay, DC-10 boy is more like it, this is before the MD-11 was introduced to service). I didn't like the L-1011's S-duct at all. But reading a book by a guy who flew for a week on one of Delta's L-1011s, then the Queen of the Fleet (it was ship 723, 763, something like that), changed my perspective totally. Once I realized how unique the L-1011 was, and how fine her engineering, my perspective totally changed. I cared naught for the DC-10 after that, and even the MD-11 I viewed with suspicion as an upstart with bad landing qualities.

777 and MD-11. I admit that I've had my dream airline (Fleetwing Air Lines), and for a long time I had the MD-11 in the fleet roster, even knowing that the 777 was the superior aircraft. Finally, I had to admit that having MD-11s was romantic, but not practical.

ERJ over CRJ. My first RJ flight was on a Comair CRJ, and I thought they were pretty neat. Especially since my last Comair flight had been on a Brasilia. But the ERJ is roomier than the Brasilia, and I prefer the 1-2 seating and the larger, better positioned windows over the CRJ.

However I refuse to give up my MD-90s and 717s in favor of any 737 or A320, ever. Who cares if they need more maintenance...?

Well,
I have always been a fan of some of the older aircraft, as well as some of the newer stuff. I really have an affinity for the 727-200, 737-100/-200, DC-9 series, 757-200, 767-200/-300, the MD-90 and the DC-10/MD-11. It used to be that I didn't care for the L1011 that much, but I've come to realize that everything in the air is special in it's own little way. I appreciate anything that flies really....I just have some personal favorites. It doesn't really matter what I'm flying in, just as long as I come up and come down in one piece.

Never. Since I first flew it when I was 3, the 747 has always been my favorite aircraft.

The B744 got me into aviation and it was my second flight of my life. I was 5. Until today I'm still with the 747 although I do like other planes like the B777s and the A310s.. etc. But to answer to your question, No.

That's the thing, though...the 747 has never been a huge hit with me, personally. I'm not sure why. Neat yes, and if I ever fly on one I might change my mind, but otherwise...

I guess like you said everyone has different tastes and likings... not everyone likes the B777 for example.

Mr BA:
True. Not everyone likes the 777 but the people who operate it such as line mchanics, pilots etc etc LOVE it. It's a fantastic machine to keep in the air.

My favorite aircraft for a very long time was the 747-200.. then
one of my good friends who is a captain for EL AL changed fleets to the
777-200, and after having many flightdeck visits, i definetly changed my mind.
there is no aircraft (IMHO) i love more then the 772...
cockpit? it's that little room in the front of the plane where the pilots seat.. but that's not important now

Nope, I believe mine has always been the DC9 series Aircraft.

DC9-10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 81, 82, 83, 87, 88, 90, 95.

All of them have been my favorite. Of course, right now, My favorite favorite is the McDonnell Douglas MD-95

My favorites are, and will always be, the 707 and 727. This is because those were the first two types I flew on way back in 1968. Close behind would be the VC-10 and Comet because I was around in their last days of airline service and have a soft spot in my heart for what was. Those four are etched in cement and will never change. Number 5 does vary often though.

For a LONG time, my favorite was the 727. I always admired the L1011 for its engineering. However, one flight on a 777 was all it took. She's my baby.

That's of recent aircraft. Nothing will ever replace a Constellation or a Boeing 314 Clipper in my all time favorite list.

I've always had a thing for rear engined T-tailed jets. The 727,DC9,MD80,MD90 and the MD95(717). My favourite used to be the 727 until the MD95 came out and i actually saw one for real. I also like the tri-jets, the L1011,DC10 and the MD11.

Never.
747 has always been my favorite since I first saw it (Aug. 31 1971, National Airlines, @ MIA).
Then, it was confirmed when I first flew it (Jan. 7 1978, TWA, JFK-MAD / MAD-BCN).
It's always a pleasure when I have the chance to fly one (last one Feb. 24 2002, Lufthansa, FRA-IAD).
And it's a delight to my eyes just seeing one at any airport (last one May 15, Northwest, @ DTW).
I enjoy any kind of 747 (from the 100's to the 400's, and of course SP's, which I have yet to fly).
I like other most recent aircraft (like A-330), or even older (like DC-10), but no one beats for me the sight of the majestic B-747.

Yes mine have every so often.

As a kid I loved the Carravelle until I first took a trip in a DC10 and I was hooked. When Boeing introduced the 767 that was it and I even had it on my car license plate. More recently I took to Airbus with the A340, which to this day is still a favorite however I discovered that big is not always the best and when I first flew on a little ERJ I had discovered a really nice plane to fly in.
I remember when the DC-3 was new!

I have always liked the 707 the most, and nothing seems to be likely to surpass it. When United first put the 767 into service, they had a commercial on TV that began with the words "If you ever had a favorite aircraft, this one's going to take its place", and then the lights turned on to reveal the 767. I thought that the predictions might come true as the 767 began to become more successful, but the 707 stayed my favorite. Maybe its increasing rareness kept it special compared to more common planes.

Errrmm BR715-A1-30:
Not to be a stickler or anything, but you do realize the DC-9 designator stops at the -83 series. So it would be:

DC-9-10/-20/-30/-40/-50/-81/-82/-83
Then the MD-87, MD-88, MD-90, and the MD-95 (Boeing 717)

For some reason I always had D-ABYM as my favorite plane.
Besides that I just love too many planes to have a favorite.
I consider the A32S, A333, 747 and 777 my "planes of favor".

I love all the classic -100s and -200s models from Boeing.
Of the 'newer' planes I somehow just go crazy for the 767-200ER. It's fantastic...the looks...and it made low-density, yet cost-effective, longhaul travel possible.
I like Airbus planes as well, but no 'emotional' feelings like with Boeing planes, 'cause after all they look all the same.

I guess mine would be the L-1011 & VC-10 for sheer beauty.. the 707 and 727 also for rugged ggod looks.. the 747-400 for just being so amazing to watch... the A330 for landing like a bird of prey.. the 757 for just being cool the Concorde for being most unique.. The CRJ for being a little rocket and the DC-3 for being...well a classic..

...but the question asked if my favorite aircraft ever changed... if I look at the L-1011 the answer is yes.. it started out as the L-1011-1 and evolved into a slightly more stylized L-1011-500.. somewhat shorter with longer range and a wind faring in top. The original was still the best in my mind... beautiful smooth lines and an interior that was open and roomier than anything flying today.
