MAS & Klia Hub Operations

Wed May 28, 2003 6:57 pm

Dr. David Jarach, the Aviation head of the Bocconi Business School, told us yesterday that Malaysia Airlines, generally speaking, does not do proper scheduling for connections at KUL. I was quite surprised to learn it, but is it true that such operations do not work as efficiently as the ones pulled out from SIN and BKK?

The fastest way to become a millionaire in the airline business is to start as a billionaire.

So far the flights I've took from SIN to Europe via KUL on MAS are all all right, in terms of schedule. Not too sure about connection for other flights though. Guess Odie can enlighten you on that one.

Well for European connections from Australia and vice versa they have best connections.

But for North American connections in North Asia, they have poor schedules (not MH's fault, just that not enough frequency by MH and other carriers).

For regional they are not the best but still acceptable, but from experience, to connect on SQ flights in SIN from PEN to regional destinations used to be a little inconvenient but have become worse since with the cuts. Nonetheless, there are some regional destinations that are served by SQ with a very good connection time so overall I don't have much to moan about SQ/SIN and MH/KUL.

Example: KUL-NRT-YVR

KUL-NRT on JL is departing KUL around 2200 and arrive next day 0600
NRT-YVR on JL is departing NRT around 1800 and arrive same day 1300 at YVR

Obviously here, you have long waits!

Example: KUL-TPE-YVR

KUL-TPE on BR is departing KUL around 1500 and arrive 2000
TPE-YVR on BR is departing TPE around 2200 and thus have short layover

But when speaking of MH, they fly direct 1 stop services to EWR and LAX.

All my flights with MH have resulted in waits between 30 mins - 4hrs at the airport in KL. Not that I mind because I am normally in the Golden Lounge! And yes, I agree that since the cut of frequencies between SIN and KUL, all the connections have been rather screwed. I guess it the same situation with SQ's Malaysian pax flying from KUL.

Like any other SE Asia airport, KUL acts as a hub for passengers traveling between Europe and Australia/New Zealand or the rest of Asia. MAS' connection services from Europe to Asia, Perth, Melbourne, Sydney and soon, Brisbane is excellent. Flights from Europe arrive early in the morning and flights to these cities depart early in the morning, allowing passengers 1-3 hours to explore the airport before boarding the flight onwards to their final destination. Fights from Asia/Australia/New Zealand works pretty well for MH too.

The other route where passengers use KUL as a hub is India-US traffic. Passengers for these flights might have a slightly longer layover compared to the Europe-Australia passengers (and flights to/from New York have pretty long layovers, but from what I heard, passengers actually use Dubai instead of KUL to connect to the New York flights)

SIN and BKK works better as hub because there are more airlines/flights that operates into these airport, thus increasing connectivities. But, KUL just works fine as a hub for MH.

Airbus Lover: My family took the KUL-NRT-YVR trip earlier this year and JAL provide passengers a 6 hour hotel room for the outbound and a free one night stay in a hotel near Narita for their return sector.

MH is trying to do the same things for some of its flight too. Passengers traveling in any class will be able to make use of a day room at a hotel near KLIA if their onward connecting flight is more than 8 hours and on top of that, lunch and transfers are provided to these passengers. (This is taken from MAS Switzerland's website, not too sure if it applies to other passengers)

I think OdiE nailed this one pretty well.

I scanned MH's schedule's a few months ago when I was bored, and one thing that struck me was that their scheduling is starting to mirror SQ's more and more as they expand their flight frequencies. I wonder if SQ is flattered or indignant!

OdiE,

At first I was thinking of not flying JL but now that you have mentioned it, I might check with my travel agent and reconsider it...

Does Korean Air (if anyone knows) have such offers if transit is longer than 6 hrs?

I was thinking to fly using a round the world tix of MH/AC which has very attractive prices for Business Class with a maximum stopover of 3 times anywhere as long as you connect on either AC or MH flights and one way transpacific and one way transatlantic. This way we can use it to fly MH longhaul since they have a better service and product and AC on shorthauls.

For example: KUL-TPE-LAX (MH) LAX-YVR (AC) YVR-EWR (AC) EWR-DXB-KUL (MH).

Just found out that MH indeed offer passengers a hotel stay if you are transiting in KUL for more than 8 hours. According to this passenger's review, MAS provided this passenger hotel accommodation, transfer and lunch for her 12 hours layover in KUL.
