Virgin Australia To Get Terminals

Sun Dec 05, 1999 12:04 pm

I have read in this mornings newspapers here in Australia that the owners of Sydney and Melbourne Airports (seperate owners) are intending to build new and 'proper' common user terminals for start-up airlines. They have reportedly talked to Virgin and Impulse (an Aussie regional) about access to these terminals. This would surely be a major barrier overturned for Virgin.

It is also interesting to note that Virgin has been given two pages of free advertising every weekend in the newspapers, i mean editorial space since they announced they were going to starp ops downunder.

Richard Branson's made some pretty ambitious promises in the time he's been here in Australia - how is he going to get 5 737-300s here, and running as an airline before the end of this month?? He mentioned on TV today he's had experience starting 3 other airlines, but this really has to be rushing things!!

It's all so sudden, you have to wonder if it's possible, but like a lot of people, I'm really hoping it is! I've had enough of Qantas lately: consistently late, with bad service.. I can't wait to have a real choice!

"It is also interesting to note that Virgin has been given two pages of free advertising every weekend in the newspapers, i mean editorial space since they announced they were going to starp ops downunder." What does this mean? Is someone just a little bit envious of the press coverage Branson is getting? It's about time someone sorted out the cosy duopoly of Australia's domestic aviation business, the most immature airline network in the civilised world - if I was a newspaper editor I'd give Virgin the coverage too. Anyway, not much else happens in Australia - and coverage of foreign events is virtually non-existent (I have heard Aussie national news anchorpeople mispronounce (badly) foreign capitals, like "Bee-you-nos Air-ees" instead of "B-wen-os Arr-ees"). BTW, I'm Australian and proud of it, the only things that embarrass me is Australian news, airlines and politicians. Everything else about the place rocks.

What do you mean, "by the end of this month". Richard Branson said that he hoped to have Virgin Australia beggining by next year before the Olympics. Also, you said how would he get 5 737-300's here. Maybe he'll get them flown over!!

To get new airliners into a country - permanently - takes a lot more than simply flying them in! I was also implying about having the staff hired and ready to operate them, places ready to maintain and clean them, etc, etc.

There's been a lot of coverage of the interviews with Branson here in Sydney..and starting operations by the end of this month was mentioned in a few articles here.

I think my opinion of Qantas has offended some: I'm sorry it has, but there's only so much bad service you can take!

Richard Branson said that he would be selling only about 1/2 the planes' seats at $100 ONE-WAY, between Brisbane & Sydney. Also, this would only be a Coke and Nuts in flight service.

Also as an example, Ansett (I know this for certain) offers flights from Brisbane - Sydney, Return, for $189 (sometimes, they are in the paper!), with PROPER inflight service.

He also said that there would be 143 seats on a B737-300. I know, that you can just fit 110 seats in a B737-300 comfortably. He is bringing in the American type seating arrangements. The way he can do this is by making the seats smaller!!!

I'm with ya all the way with this TWA319....Qantas sucks, but their employees don't know it! They are so caught up in their own bullshit..they don't live in the real world...or maybe they think they are too good for the real world.....
