Anderson said something very interesting: The number of legacy carriers could drop to three from the current six. Any idea on how many network carriers we say 10 years ago and how many have been acquired or bought?

In a sense we're already down to 3 legacy carriers: United/USAirways, Continental/Delta/Northwest, and American. The six carriers have already "merged" into 3 groupings.

How much further these groupings blend is up for discussion.

It is my belief that 3 global alliances, Star - oneworld - SkyTeam will affect the local US market as carriers submerge their identity in favor of the globally recognized brand. How long this takes is anyone's guess.

Many carriers have changed their names in the past, after a period of adjustment the new identity became the recognized one.

In a few years we may all be on here reminiscing about Delta, American, United, et al...

And at the risk of using the most over-used and annoying cliche on this forum: only time will tell.
Next up...STL-DEN-STL for the Airliners International collectibles gathering in June. Don't miss it!

I think UAL/U will eventually merge, UAL being the name kept.

The others are tricky it could be..

CO/DL and AA/NWA.

Or CO/NWA with AA and DL remaining as the third and fourth carriers.

One thing I do know..

UAL, DL, AA will not merge with each other, meaning those three would have to merge with one of the other three..

CO, NWA, U.

SO my prediction is..

UAL/U.

CO and either DL or NWA

And AA with NWA or AA by itself.
