Amazing Race 4 (LAX Airport)

Fri May 30, 2003 11:00 am

Did anyone watch the premier of The Amazing Race 4 on CBS tonight? The teams flew out of LAX to MXP via ZRH, FRA, and AMS on Swiss, Lufthansa, and KLM respectively.

Does anyone know whether the producers of this show were limited to what flights the teams could purchase tickets on, as a security concern, in the post 9/11 world? The host specified that only three flights were available to the teams. The LX and LH flights departing at the same time, and the KL flight departing one hour later.

The LX flight was depicted as an MD11, the LH flight a 747-400, and the KL flight, a 747-300.

I would say that's a commercial for KLM, Lufthansa and Swiss rather than security concern. Notice how many times the commentator repeat the name of these 3 airlines and the camera is always shooting at these 3 airlines only? (make sense since they are only allowed to fly these 3 airlines, but I think advertising plays a big part behind this). Also when those guys won the free vacation to Hawaii, notice that he actually emphasize on AA's website?

I think that it was just one of the producers' ways of running the show. They often divide the teams up into groups. They did it later in the show by making the teams vie for 3 different buses.

Dammit.......  Sad !

I knew there was something I was meaning to catch. Unfortunely I got caught up with Airport 75 on AMC as I was doing some work. I'll mark down next Thursday as my 'Amazing Race' day.

Normally these so called reality based programs bore me to tears, thus I never watch them. However since I had spent so much of my 20s thru late 30s, globetrotting, I can to some extent relate to this program and I enjoyed the first segment of this series.

All I can tell you about AR4 is that a team came bolting off a Qantas 767 in Cairns after arriving from Sydney, chased by the cameras.

I saw it. It was most certainly great publicity for KLM, Lufthansa, and Swiss(who badly needs it). I do wonder though, why the producers did not reserve 1 pair of seats on an Alitalia flight nonstop to MXP, it might depart later, but arrive earlier. I thought this would have been a great way to reward the 1st place team at the time.

Give me a break, I created this username when I was a kid...

Anybody else notice that it was called Swissair and not SWISS, no matter how many SWISS signs and planes that they showed?

I noticed that too! They kept saying Swissair! They limited the flights on purpose, they all departed at different times, so if you came late, then you face the consequences. If they didn't limit the flights, then some late teams could probably find a flight to Milan faster than some of the teams who arrived first!

The first leg of the race for Amazing Race 1, 2, and 3 also had teams split up on pre-selected flights, first come first serve. It's not for security, it's a part of the game the producers planned well before 9/11.

Anyone notice also that the father-son team wanted to stick with the air traffic controllers, thinking it would be advantageous?

I would think that Lufthansa, Swiss and KLM offered either free flights or something for the footage and promotion as in all previous AR's they never showed the right footage of the airlines or planes the teams were actually travelling on.
