Airports With 3 Tower Freqs?

Sat May 31, 2003 7:05 am

How many airports ever have three controllers, on three frequencies, controlling takeoffs and/or landings at the same time? Denver? DFW? O'Hare?

Well, ATC is not my specialty, but at a medium hub like RNO, you would have one controller doing clearance delivery, one on ground frequency, and one on tower (local) frequency. Downstairs in the radar room, you would have various controllers handling approach and departure frequencies.

This is common at many large airports with numerous runways in use at the same time- like LAX,O'Hare and many GA airports even.

ATL has 4 runways (soon 5) open at all times... they have like 6 frequencies, but probably 3 or 4 active at one time.

Dallas has alot I'm sure. They have 3 towers I think. Here in Cleveland we have 2 local frequencies. One for 6L/24R and 6C/24C and the other for 6R/24L and 10/28.

PIT has 5 i believe. 119.1(RY 10R/28L) 128.3(RY 10L/28R) 135.025(RYS 10C/28C 14/32) 270.325(RYS 10R/28L 10C/28C 14/32) 291.7(RY 10L/28R). Let alone every other freq. known to man for things such as clearance, ground, dep, apprch, unicom etc.

Yeah, I should've said VHF frequencies only. And, of course, I'm not talking about ground control or clearance delivery or app/dep-- just controllers that clear aircraft to take off and/or land.

I doubt that it's common for takeoffs and landings to be controlled by three different frequencies at once. LAX has two pairs of runways, so I assume that means not more than two freqs for them. Truth to tell I wouldn't have thought PIT ever needed more than two, but if anyone has heard three in use...

Which GA airports need more than two?

LAX only has 2 active tower frequencies. 133.9 controls the north complex (24L/R) while 120.95 controls the south complex (25L/R).

DFW normally has 124.15 going for the east side (18L/R), 126.55 for the west (17C/R and 13L) and they bring in 127.5 for 17L during busy times for landings on that runway.

Yeah, that's what I would've thought at places like DFW-- two frequencies usual, but three at busy times. Anybody know about DEN?

AFAIK JFK never needs more than two (119.1 and 123.9), but if anyone knows better...

Anyone confirm about AMS?

Usually AMS stays at just one [119.225]. Sometimes during heavy traffic, and odd runway combinations, they will activate a second tower position [118.100]. However haven't been for a while [not this year anyway] at AMS listening in to these freqs, so not sure how they do it these days.

I'm pretty sure that when the new 3800m runway 18R/36L is fully operational late fall 2003, that AMS will have two freqs operational throughout the day. One will be dedicated to 18R/36L and probably 18C/36C as well [at least inbounds], while the other one will take care of all other runways [18L/36R, 06/24, 09/27, 04/22] and VFR traffic.
