Virgin To Join AF-DL Alliance Or KLM-NW

Mon Dec 06, 1999 12:10 am

Branson has been reported to be in talks with Delta Airlines and Air France to join their alliance and sell 40% of Virgin's stock. Another contender is KLM and Northwest, but this is only if the DL-AF thing doesn't go through. Delta and Virgin had an agreement some years back.

That is great news, now that Delta may be able to switch from LGW to LHR.

Hi

According to some analysts, an alliance with Air France would allow to Virgin to operate the Concorde between LHR and JFK. The Concordes of Air France are not fully utilized, so, why not?

What do you think about that?

Best regards

I doubt that, given the choice, Delta would withdraw completely out of London Gatwick in favor of London Heathrow - both are nice, but Delta has a lot resting on Gatwick. However, maybe they will shift one of their daily Atlanta bound flights to Heathrow, (eg. DL11/DL12) and maybe replace it with either a New York JFK or Salt Lake City direct service from Gatwick? Just a thought.

In response to DL/AF Concorde services from Paris CDG to Atlanta, this looks unlikely as the Concorde would have to be less than full to fly the 4,225 miles. (When full, Concorde's maximum range is only around 3,950 miles) Besides, the route would have to take them out over the Atlanta from Savannah onwards, rather than at Gander / New York etc. as otherwize the airliner would not be able to go Supersonic over land - and what is the point of a supersonic airliner if it cannot fly supersonically?

In response to Virgin operating Concorde from LHR - JFK - that would be seriously cool as Delta would have access to LHR that way if nothing else and would be the only airline with access to Concorde services from JFK to both LHR and CDG.

Hope this answers some questions.

It is still anyone's guess which alliance Virgin would choose.

It was reported in a Singapore papers recently that SIA and Virgin would be seeking a MAJOR codeshare deal which would see Virgin flying to different parts of Australia for the first time ever. Rumour has it that Virgin might join Star Alliance among local reporters. Imagine an SQ flight that flies from SIN- MEL : SQ 227/ LH 6384/ AN 8227/ VS____ .

Does joining hands with SIA also meant that NW/KLM would not be a leading contender as it would meant switching of partners from MAS to SIA?

Is there any other recent agreements by Virgin with other alliance-related carriers???

In reply to Jubilee777 question about KLM/NW the answer is no. As far as the rumours I've heart KLM/NW will not join the Star Aliance. Why should they? MAS provides the same acces to South-East Asia as SIA. Furthermore, the Wings alliance (KL/AZ/NW) is much more succesful in terms of intergrating the partners into one company. Leaving the Wings alliance for the UA/LH controlled Star Aliiance would be foolish.

It's true that Branson prefers Delta/AF. These rumours are circulating for a while (from the moment the DL/AF alliance was formed) now as the rumour that Virgin will team up with KLM/NW/AZ. The first rumour is entirely based on the fact that Branson wants to fly Concorde LHR-JFK. The latter rumour is based on the fact that Virgin has a codeshare alliance with CO (in which NW has a majority stake in term of voting rights) and MAS and on the fact that KLM does the maintenance on VS B747.

My view is that Virgin should stay out of any alliance. If Branson wants to fly Concorde why not lease one from AF?
