Will Malaysia Go European?

Mon Dec 06, 1999 1:10 am

I read recently that Malaysia Airlines was being courted by Airbus to replace its existing fleet of Boeing 737-400s/500s with a mix of Airbus A320/321. The deal would also entice MAS to purchase the Airbus A340-500/600 instead of the Boeing 777-200X. Has anyone read any updates of this?

Will Malaysia Airlines ditch Boeing along with all the other business arrangements (eg. the setting up of a Boeing-Flight Safety centre at the new Kuala Lumpur International Airport).

Airbus and Malaysia Airlines did have a fall-out over the Airbus A330...(MAS was a launch customer but the deal went sour with a dispute over Malaysia Airlines traffic rights in Europe).

I reckon Malaysia Airlines should sell all their Airbus aircraft and just stick with Boeing. This would mean updating its Boeing 737s with the new generation 737s (MAS has had excellent service from this workhorse - why change a habit of a lifetime) and perhaps purchasing a few Boeing 757s or Boeing 767s in order to fit in-between the 737 and 777 - an aircraft size that has been missing from its fleet.

Hi there! I doubt that MAS would switch to an entirely airbus fleet. To the best of my knowledge, they are going to get rid of their DC 10s and MD11s. The economics of cost will also make them realise that it is not too feasible to run a dual fleet of Boeings and Airbus aircrafts. It would be more economical to run a single fleet operation. So not unless they are offered a terribly good deal by airbus, I should think they would stick with boeing. As for 757, I doubt it would be useful as 737s are more appropriate for their regional routee. Perhaps on high density routes, they would deploy their 777s or 330s.

I would think that with all the political problems between the US and Malaysia recently regarding lack of political reform (Al Gore's visit in ?1998 in which he told the crowd "Reformasi" over and over again and the whole Anwar affair that Malaysia would be in the mood to punish the US buy buying a few Airbus planes even if it makes more sense to go all-Boeing. And I'm sure Airbus would make them a great offer especially after the A330/traffic rights problem.

Anyone else agree/disagree?

You may have a point - the Malaysian & Brunei governments who are still major share-holders still have quite a way of swinging deals around for MAS.

I mentioned the 757 & 767 as Royal Brunei its sister-airline operates these - perhaps MAS could utilise these aircraft of its regional routes eg. KUL-BKK, KUL-DPS and even KUL-India or KUL-Darwin routes where the 737 is deemed too small (due to range and comfort)
