Its Been One Year Since Ive Flown

Tue Jun 03, 2003 7:22 am

Well just as the topic says it has been one year since ive flown. I miss it alot, i wish i could afford it but in these times i can not. See Trip report http://airliners.net/discussions/trip_reports/read.main/29840/6/. But i miss it and hope i will be able to fly again soon. But i wonder if anyone else has not flown in a long time like me?

I haven't flown in quite a long time (on an airliner) either. Although, unlike you, I don't miss it. Have two trips coming up this summer on them and am not really looking forward to them. Long layovers, lots of connections, and I have to deal with all that TSA stuff. *sigh*

My last flight was an unexpected return to the UK with an illness when on tour with a sports team in Spain.

Before that my last flight was December, so not really that long. But I did go through two long periods (1989-1994 and 1994-1998) where I did not fly at all.

Next flight is in a months time to Keflavik with Icelandair from Heathrow which I am really looking forward to  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I've got you just considerably beat. The last flight I took was Memorial Day weekend 2001. I won;t fly, not becuse I don't want to, or can't afford it. I am making a conscious and deliberate decision not to because I don't want to be treated like a criminal for coming near an airport. I have started numerous discussions on this matter. So if you want to read my opinions in greater detail do an author post by me under this board.

Presently I am not flying as much as I use to, tho I expect that to change real soon, and I am looking forward to it. Yes it is a hassle and lets face it more than a few employees act towards you like, they could care that you showed up for a flight with there air carrier. It must be the thrill of actually flying that I enjoy.

Looks like I won't be able to fly again till October either. I was going to in July to visit a friend in Orlando (I was planning on going on Pan Am 3, even), but something came up and the money was needed so, you know. Oh, well.

I last flew (one way YYZ-YUL on AC Tango) Jan. 6, 2002. Love the experience and dont' mind airport hassles at all. I like the airport environment, even when busy and congested. But with the relatively high fares and VERY high taxes up here, I can't afford it! However I did take a 20 min. sightseeing flight on a BT-67 (DC-3 t-prop conversion) last summer at the Canadian Aviation Expo, and I'll prolly take a sightseeing flight in the adirondacks this summer. As for my next airline flight... none in the foreseeablt future.  Sad
Next flight.... who knows.

I last flew in March to Egypt and Lebanon.

I usually fly about twice a year. Sometimes three times a year, but not more.

I'm with Matt D on this one. If at all possibly, I'll fly myself there. Light twins will get you there just as fast as an airliner in a lot of cases anyways.

My last flight was on the 8th of March, 2003. My next flight will be on the 21st of June, 2003. I will be flying FL on 2 717s. GPT-ATL-GPT

I hope you get to fly soon. I should be on at least 2 more 717s in July, but I am supposed to make two trips in July.

Flying isn't that much of a hassle at all.

What's the big deal?

1) Check in
2) Bring checked bag(s) to X-Ray (or have TSA agent use mobile device to do the same thing like at ORD T3)
3) Go through security (not much of a hassle)
4) Arrive at gate
5) Get on plane
6) Get off plane
7) Leave airport (or make connection)

Hassle?

I flew to Paris on LH in June 2001 for the Paris Air Show. Had my first flight on the CRJ, never again. I liked the A340 though.

Like you I don't fly very often. but when I miss flying, I book a roundtrip flight with a low cost carrier at the lowest cost !
Example: In February 2002, i flew from Nice to Geneva with easyJet, and back to NCE the same day. I don't remember how much it costed exactly, I just remember it was the lowest price available on this destination.
Then, last December, I booked a roundtrip flight from Toulon to Paris with AirLib Express, it was very cheap too.

Come on, its not that bad. MattD you shouldn't deprive yourself of something you like for fear of being treated like a criminal. They treat us crew exactly like anyone else (except we can cut in the security line). I get searched all the time. You just have to get used to people feeling you up and going through your bags. It's really not that bad when you accept it. It's not that different from flying before 9/11. You'll probably even recognize some of the same ghetto-ass screeners, although now their uniforms say "TSA" instead of "Argenbright".

Flying is can be a lot of fun. Go ahead everybody, book a flight somewhere.

Last non commercial flight : LFLE-LFLE yesterday night on a Robin DR221 (front left seat off course), was quickly stopped after we saw a Cb heading to us !

Last flight : December 2002.
Next flight : this Saturday ! I'll fly CRL-STN-TSF, then TSF-CRL next Tuesday.

I usually fly between 1 and 3 times / year. The more I fly, the quickest I miss it !

I first flew when I was almost 5 years old.
Then, I passed two long periods without flying. The first one, 4 years. The second one, also 4 years.
After that, I tried to fly at least once a year. And when I became economically independent, I managed to fly a lot each year, either on business or pleasure, and keep it that way.
Last time I flew was 3 weeks ago. BCN-MAN-PHL-DTW-ATL.
Next time, it will be on Aug. 1st. Don't know yet what routing, although it will be back over the Atlantic.

With this kind of survey there is always someone that will beat the thread starter. Hmmmm... you must have been here the longest and yet haven't flown on a plane in the longest time. Surely you haven't had to wait 15 years for a cheap flight, cheap flights are not that rare.

Well, I need to fly soon. I've got 2 free Delta round-trips that expire on 11-30-03. My wife and I can't really afford a vacation this summer, so I think this is what I'm gonna do.

The tickets are good anywhere in the contiguous U.S. or Canada. My home airport is DFW. I want to go as far as Delta will take me, spend the night in a hotel near the airport (so I don't have spend cash on a rental car), get up the next day and reverse the trip.

Current plans are to go to Halifax via Boston, then return to Boston, Cincinnati, and back to DFW.

This way, I get my flying fix taken care of. And still have one round-trip ticket left.

I last flew on April 6th from BRU-EMA with bmibaby and i fly again on Saturday morning on bmi/BD from LHR-LIN on F100 and then back on Monday LIN-LHR on A321.

I did go 5 years without flying between 1994 and 1999 when i went MAN-SYD-MAN both times in 94 & 99.

I haven't flown since December 2002, when I flew YQU(Grande Prairie, AB)-YEG-YVR on the 19th and returned the same way on the 22nd on AC Jazz and Zip. The flights weren't half bad. Normally, there's a flight or two for me in the spring, but since my brother had been coming up to Alberta quite a bit (and also just got married last weekend), there's been no need for me to do any flying for now.

I usually fly about anywhere from 4-8 times a year. But I did once go up to 3 years without a flight from 1994 until 1997. Not surprisingly, Canadian Airlines threatened to revoke my Canadian Plus FF points!  Angry

The next time I fly will be in July this year - and it will be quite a bit of flying at that. I'll fly WestJet on July 4 from YEG to YVR with a day-long "layover" in YYC, as I want to spend a day in Calgary before heading to Vancouver later in the evening. Then on July 6, it's AC (if it hasn't gone under by then!!) from YVR to YYZ with an overnight stay in YYZ and returning to YVR via YYZ on July 14. Then I fly back home to YEG on July 20 on WJ. Why WestJet? I'm getting sick and tired of flying on 732's between YEG and YVR, and WJ has 73G's, which I haven't tried before.

Treated like a criminal if you come near the airport? That's why you don't fly? Security is up because of what happened on 9'11. If you can't come to terms with that, and why passengers are scrutinized more than ever, you don't belong in the skies bro. But you show them, and not fly.  Smile

That's right. But why "don't I belong in the sky", as you put it?

Because I don't want my travel habits tracked?

Because I don't want a credit check done on me every time I fly?

Because I don't want my car and personal belongings ransacked?

Because I don't want to have to arrive at the airport 3 hours before departure?

Because I don't want to support an organization that I feel engages in ethically questionable practices?

Because I had a lifelong hobby stolen away from me?

I mean take your pick.

And please don't give me any BS about "well if you don't have anything to hide......".

Not having anything to hide versus my right to privacy are worlds apart and are not to be confused with each other. Remember the whole Clinton/Starr/Lewinsky debacle?

And if you really feel that way (and had some balls), then you'd have no trepidation whatsoever about posting your Social Security Number and/or home address on this board for all to see. Or a copy of your credit report.

hey...if you've got nothing to hide......

MattD,

Are you upset because they go through your stuff when you go through security? Or is the credit checks and other stuff. Again, it's really not all that bad. You should take a trip somewhere and enjoy. Don't deprive yourself of something you like just to spite the TSA, you're ony hurting yourself. They don't care if you don't fly. Plus, they're not all bad, in fact a lot of them are pretty nice. It's just the jerks that give them a bad reputation.

All my traveling was done as a kid and teenager and as such, I had little say in the matter. As an adult, however, I've had no occasion to travel. It's just not something I would do on my own just for the hell of it. My job does not require it, nor do I have any inclination for travel as a form of leisure. I'm here because I've loved planes since I was 5, and have studied and photographed them since I was 9.

My last trip was in late October 2002, JFK-LGB-OAK-JFK on B6. I'm scheduled to go JFK-MCO-JFK on DL this coming August, however it's possible I might make a ISP-PBI-ISP trip on WN in July.
