United To Close PHL And LAS FA Domiciles

Wed Jun 04, 2003 1:28 am

In a continuing effort to cut costs, United has given the 90-day notice to the AFA that they intend on closing both the PHL and LAS flight attendant domiciles on August 31st, 2003. Furthermore, they have announced a surplus of flight attendants at the MIA domicile, thereby reducing the hours for the MIA flight attendants.

Among those affected by the closure are 192 FA at LAS, 191 FA at PHL, and 814 FA at MIA.

Are these high seniority bases? With they transfer to other bases, and does this mean more layoffs coming.

PHL, no, Vegas does have a few. Really hard to tell without actually flying out of those bases, though.

There won't be any layoffs, though, as United is actually recalling a bunch (I think around 1,000...?) flight attendants.

Those F/A's who are domiciled in PHL and LAS will now have to commute to a new domicile. Mostly this is an administrive move. At one time here in PHL we had 3 SW supervisors and and a manager in addition to two or three who worked in the Domicile office. Those people will be laid off, and hte senior mangement will probably be shifted to another position with in the company but probably not in PHL.

Could the PHL closure have anything to do with the US code share and US now being part of Star alliance?

No the Codeshare has othing to do with the Flight attendents. If anything UA will eventually be increasing the gauge of aircrfat coming in and out of PHL, to take advantage of the US codeshare and now to take advantage of the Star relationship.

I can actually forsee a possible shift of BOS-LHR routes to PHL to compete with BA and take advantage of the critical mass that Star can create.

But closing the domicile has to do with better untilization of resouces. There really isn't any reason why UA should have people in PHL duplicating jobs that people in larger domiciles do for only 191 Flight attendents.

I feel bad for the people who will lose there job because of this. I have worked with anumber of them for years and am sad to see them go. But I understand that thier work here is really redundant.

thanks for the very informative reply. Yes change is always hard tho if it saves money down the line that is what is really important in this day and age.
