Airports That No LOnger Have Service

Wed Jun 04, 2003 4:36 am

Can any of you provide me with airline information about the following airports that once had scheduled service, but no longer do?

Riverside, CA
Apple Valley, CA
Fullerton, CA

What carriers were there? A/C types used? Destinations? Why all service ended? Could service ever be restarted?

Thanks.

I think all 3 of those were at one time served by either Bonanza / Hughes Air West. Most likely with DC-3 or possibly F-27 and the flights were to LAX (I believe)

Tuscaloosa, Alabama used to have American Eagle. Service was discontinued due to low volume. There have been discussions about resuming regular service, but with Birmingham barely an hour away, not much has happened.
I'm not dumb. I just have a command of thoroughly useless information.

Worcestor, MA.

In the early 70's, DL flew DC-9's there. In the mid 80's and early 90's, PI, NY, and US all had mainline jets. More recently, DL and AA had regional jets there.

Now there is nothing.

Naples, Florida is loosing their last carrier, USAirways, in less than two weeks. Topeka, Kansas lost thier last carrier, USAirways, last month. Jamestown, New York is loosing thier last carrier, USAirways, at the end of the summer. In the past few months, USAirways also has pulled out of Hickory and Southern Pines, NC, Lancaster, PN, and Worceseter, MS. They were, you guessed it, the last carrier at each airport.

Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport no longer has scheduled airline service. At one time, United Express flew BAe ATPs to ORD, Northwest Airlink flew Saab 340s to DTW, and USAirways Express flew Beech 1900s to PIT from the airport. The last airline at YNG was Northwest Airlink. They have a very nice new facility there, it would be great to see an airline return scheduled service to YNG.

I think that Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport is located to close to both PIT and CAK, and also being in one of, if not THE most depressed areas of the rust belt does not sit well to see this airport rebound anytime soon.

I can think of Mankato, MN off the top of my head. I remember in the late 70's and early 80's, Republic used to serve it from MSP. After that, a small carrier known as Bemidgi (I'm sure that's not the correct spelling) took over the route. Now there is nothing. It's strange, as its a city of about 50,000 and has a couple of very, very large companies. ADM has a huge operation there, as does one or two others. It is still about a 90 minute drive from MSP. I've often thought that United Express from ORD or Delta Connection from CVG could make it work.

Utica,NY once served by empire/oneida (I believe/think, but I don't know) and more recently by Continental Connection is now....without any service.
Montpelier,VT (state capitol) someone told me that Delta had service, but I didn't buy it.
What now?

Santa Rosa, CA (STS) lost commercial air service when United Express/SkyWest pulled out in October 2001. Service may return, but we will have to wait and see on that one.

Currently, United Express flies into Springfield, IL from Chicago O'Hare.
At one time United had flights from Springfield, IL going into CGX Chicago Meigs Field but that service has been eliminated.

Marathon, Florida has scheduled air service to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida on Pan American (not PanAm), which flies three daily Cesnnas. Also, if everything works out well, Continental Connection/Gulfstream International will launch Miami-Marathon service in the fall. They are working it out with airport authorities and local hotels.

FLAIRPORT,

Athens, GA currently has airline service. US Airways Express (operated by Air Midwest) flies three flights AHN-CLT using B1900Ds. They also used to have ASA service to ATL, but that was dropped some years back (especially since Athens is practically now a suburb of Atlanta)

Fort Worth- Meacham (FTW) had some service in the past, most recent was short-lived service by Mesa to Houston.

As for Fullerton? Must have been with relatively small aircraft; FUL is a fine GA airport, but its runway is only 3121' long.

Battle Creek Mich and Jackson Michigan used to have service in the late 1980s before Battle Creeks ops moved to AZO. I think Allegan County used to have scheduled service too.

Does anyone know if Charlevoix Michigan still has scheduled service? There used to be Beaver Island Airways on Islander aircraft.

I believe the Beaver Island service is still around.

Benton Harbor, MI (BEH) used to get service from Mesaba/NW with 5 daily flights to/from Detroit using the Saab 340 in 2000, but they pulled out that year.

And yes, Elvis was sighted at a Burger King in Kalamazoo not long after his death.

FLAIRPORT, with the exception of Destin, I know that ever airport you list had air craft service in the past. I just wonder though, does LFT have no airline service today?

I'll add the two nearest me to the post. Nogales and Douglas Arizona. Nogales was a purely small airline service to TUS and PHX but Douglas was part of the AA transcon service, even seeing DC-6s and -7s. Quite sad to see the old airfield as it is today.

Salem, OR used to have United mainline and Horizon and now nothing. Though it just over an hour to PDX, it really sucks if you have a flight that leaves between 6 or 7am. I am flying PDX-BOI-IDA next week and I have to be at the airport by 4:15am according to Horizon meaning I have to leave home at 3am meaning I get up at 2:30am. Makes for long day. It would be nice to see Horizon back with flights to SEA and maybe even SFo or LAX

American Eagle/Connection flies into Springfield, Il.
---

This service is American Connection service to Saint Louis. Uses small props, but has the highest number of flights per day. Jetstream aircraft, I think. American Eagle used to fly to ORD with larger props. They pulled out.

As mentioned before - United(Air Wisconsin) regional jets go to ORD. CRJ's are used. This is the only current Jet service.

American Trans Air(Through its regional) flies to MDW. They use Dornair 328's.

The previously mentioned service to Chicago Meigs was by Great Lakes Aviation. They flew in their own name and in United's name, though their planes all had United colors. Beach 1900's I think. I know it was 19 seaters. I believe (I may be wrong) that this was the only service to Miegs field from anywhere for a long time. This was actually a fairly popular service, but Chicago's mayor had a vendetta against Meigs field.....

Pretty recently Northwest Airlink flew to Memphis, with props. They did not do well, and pulled out. Many others have as well. American even tried mainline jet service a while back, but it flopped. We must look better on paper than we are in reality  Sad .

RJ service to a DC area airport would be nice. That is where a lot of the O&D is to, as well as Chicago. Skyway (Midwest Express's owned regional) was seriously considering it at one time. However - this is unlikely due to the current state of the industry, and the presence of Southwest in STL and Airtran in BMI. We have, however, done very well recently compared to other
airports in the area.

As For The Original Question

Fri Jun 06, 2003 12:29 am

It seems Bonanza started DC-3 service to RAL in 1956 and Air West dropped the F27 service in 1969. Bonanza started Apple Valley in 1957 or possibly 1958; Hughes dropped it in the early 70s. Only fixed-wing service I found at Fullerton was Golden West Twin Otters starting 1970 or before and lasting for most (all?) of the 1970s. Seventeen each weekday to LAX in 1970.

FLAIRPORT:
Lafayatte, LA definitely has scheduled service. Delta Connection, Continental Express, and Northwest Airlink all serve LFT. Check out http://www.lftairport.com.

As for Matt's question, how about.....Blythe, CA (another of the Bonanza, Hughes AW airports)?

Newport News has service by Delta/ASA (CRJ/CR7), US Airways Express (various), United Express (J-41), and AirTran (717).

Williamsport, PA has service to PIT on US Airways Express.

UN_B732: Montpeiller used to have Delta service, right after the Northeast takeover. Back in the day, I would have been able to drive about 10 minutes to Lawrence, MA (it's really at the corner of MA-125 and Sutton Street in North Andover, I work 2 minutes down the street) and take DC-3s and FH-227s up to Montpeiller (the routing was something like BOS-LWM-MHT-Concord-LEB-Montpeiller/Barre-BTV-(St. Albans?)-Montreal.

An important scene in the 1983 movie War Games involved a character's flight from Colorado to Salem, then being met at the airport. The airport scene actually was filmed at BFI.

Through the mid-1970s, Texas International flew to such small towns at Hot Springs and Jonesboro, AR; Big Spring, Victoria, and Galveston, TX; and Santa Fe, Hobbs, Roswell, Clovis and Carlsbad, NM. Some of those airports might still have some air-taxi operations.

Hard to believe Texas International once ran DC9s through Roswell on the DAL-MAF-ROW-ABQ route.

Cloudy- ATA's regional carrier operates Saab 340s.

Zanesville, Ohio (ZZV)

We had service from TWA & Lake Central (or something like that) back in the 1950s. I've even seen videos of the TW flights being operated by Constellations. I don't think the service lasted long though, and as for Lake Central & any other airline, I have no idea. If anybody can expand on my post, feel free- I want to learn more, too.

The original terminal building, which was unkept & a mess, was torn down a few years ago, replaced by a new building. This building doesn't have enough room for security or a ticket counter should any airline want to move in.

PROSA, I just watched War Games two days ago and noticed that airport scene too. The flight was supposedly non-stop from Grand Junction, CO to Salem, OR. It was on Horizon, with what looked like a Fokker 27.
