) operations to Terminal 4 next year. The move offers Virgin¿s customers and staff access to a new, privately-operated airport terminal that is setting the standard for air travel in the 21st century.

Terminal 4 is also the only terminal that will have AirTrain light rail connection to Manhattan located inside the building, providing a convenient alternative transportation option.¿

Virgin Atlantic, which has served JFK
since 1989, currently operates three flights per day from JFK
to London's Heathrow, and four flights per day (two of which are Continental codeshare flights) from Newark International Airport.

The 1.5 million square-foot Terminal 4 opened in May 2001, and is the only 24/7 operation at JFK
with U.S. Customs and Immigrations services operating around the clock. Some of the special features of Terminal 4 can be found in the Immigration Hall (open 24/7) with 50 Inspection stations capable of processing 3,200 passengers per hour. The spacious departure hall offers 144 check-in desks and service counters (of which Virgin will have 17) and a baggage system that can process up to 8500 bags-per-hour. Situated on 165 acres, the terminal has 16 gates, expandable to 32 gates, and an additional 16 remote parking positions. Security checkpoints accommodate 12 lanes for 16 gates, reducing average passenger-screening time to 1.25 minutes.
The terminal, the first private air terminal operating in the U.S., is a joint venture of Schiphol USA, a division of Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, LCOR, a large real estate concern and Lehman Brothers. Together with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, Terminal 4 is a model for public/private partnership.
Terminal 4 features five-lane, bi-level departure and arrival roadways and a new multi-story car parking facility opposite the terminal that makes access in and out, quick and convenient. The AirTrain light rail connection to Manhattan will also connect with other JFK
terminals, long-term parking, car rental locations and public transportation systems to and from the airport.
