Construction At Former Airside B Lot/TPA

Wed Jun 04, 2003 6:17 am

Today I decided to take a drive around TPA after getting my vehicle fixed in Carrollwood. I wanted to observe the construction going on at runway 18R/36L, but I also got a glimpse of construction at what was Airside B. What exactly is the purpose of this facility?

There was an article in the St. Petersburg Times back in November that mentions the construction:

The site of Airside B will be used for overnight aircraft parking. Airside C will be domlished and turned into a new facility for Southwest. I think those remaining in the last original airside building, Airside D, will move elsewhere when Airside C is finished. I am not sure what the long term plans are for Airside D.

I guess there will not be a new Airside B...

The link referenced above gets one lost in the St. Pete paper's archives. Can you post a direct link to the article? Check below the comment box for how to do direct links. Would love to read the article.

As I understand it, the space formally occupied by Airside B is to become a centralize bag scanning/sorting faculty for the other Airsides.

It looks kinda fancy. I was hoping it would be an observation area. Fat chance, I guess.
