Why Dont More Airlines Have Footrests In Y?

Wed Jun 04, 2003 10:18 am

I was thinking, Why don't more airlines put footrests on their seats in economy. The only airlines I know that do that are IB and AZ, but there are probibly more. Any carriers in the United States that have any?? It would make the seats more comfortable and enjoyable.

I'm not aware of any US carrier that has footrests on coach. Part of the reason for this is that it costs more money for that kind of seat, and they probably require more seat pitch.

Also, if you want something like that, US carriers generally want you to buy the business/first class tickets. They are, after all, a business interested in making a profit.

I doubt it, but they may also be an evacuation hazard. I'm really not familiar enough with them to know how much they may or may not block middle/window seat passengers from safely getting to an aisle.

NZ also has them in Y class - part of the take-off and landing briefing is to stow them. Only problem is if you have long legs, they hit the seat back tray.

Otherwise they are quite comfortable

Swissair had them in Y on their A330s and as far as I know, Swiss did not reconfigure those planes, so Swiss probably has them. Swissair had a 31" pitch, so I don't think that pitch had to be increased to put them in. Those foot rests retracted upwards too, thus not blocking anything, so probably did not block evacuation were it needed. I do not know how they work on other airlines though as my flights on SR were the only ones I have ever had footrests on. They were certainly good to have though.

Air Canada have them at least on their newer A320 series air craft. Theirs are great. Add a lot of comfort. Might not be around too much longer though.

DL has/had them on some of their 763ER's, I know. They were really uncomfortable, though, because the pitch was so small that the footrest either hit your shins (when it was in the up position) or forced your knees into the seat in front of you (when it was in the down position). Not good at all, in my opinion.

All of Air Canada's 321's have footrests (not sure about the leased Air France ones though) as well as what Westjet_8 stated about newer 320 family aircraft. They also have footrests on a few 763's, but the majority of them do not.

Austrian Airlines has them on all of their A330-200s, and selected A340s (if memory serves).

In addition, I seem to recall Singapore Airlines touting footrests on their Economy Class seats.

TWA had them, if I remember the aircraft correctly, in their 747s before retiring them.

United's early A320s had them, though I believe they were taken out. I remember my one and only trip on a UA A320, and the footrest was nice to have.

If Greyhound can have footrests on their buses, why can't the majors put them in a coach seat on a plane?

Kuwait Airways also has footrests in it's economy cabin on board the A340 fleet. I guess they are comfortable for some but I never ever use them and keep it stowed, I prefer less stuff around my legs.

BA have them on the 744's, and so do SQ. Provided they are properly stowed for T/O and landing they are no more of a hazard the tray tables.

Besides the expense of putting them in and maintaing them, is their a significant weight penalty incurred with them? I mean, you wouldn't think it would be significant, but I wonder if it has an effect on the total weight of the aircraft.

Just a question and my 2 cents.  Smile
