Airport With The Most Nonstop Destinations

Wed Jun 04, 2003 8:11 pm

Here's one I haven't seen. Which airport serves more cities nonstop than any other? Just looking for some facts.

S340,DH8,AT7,CR2/7,E135/45/170/190,319,320,717,732,733,734,735,737,738,744,752,762,763,764,772,M80,M90

Micstatic,

I think you have to separate Domestic non stop flights and International non stop...

I think ATL, DFW or ORD will have the most non stop flights in the wolrd, but most of them will be Domestic (huge network in US)... For international non-stops I think the winner is LHR.

I think ATL probably has the most destinations nonstop.

I'm not sure ATL would have the most nonstop destinations. There are a lot of frequencies on most of the routes from Atlanta. My guess would be LHR. Not only does BA serve a huge number of destinations from it, just think of all the carriers from around the world that serve it.

What about MIA? Most South American cities plus an impressive European network.

It must be FRA with something like 400 destinations. LHR just has something like 280 or so.

My 50% wild and 50% educated guess would be FRA as well.

My guess would be a European airport, either LHR, FRA or CDG. While US airports are the busiest in the world, most of the traffic is domestic. ORD, DFW and ATL have only a select few non-stop long-haul destinations compared to say, CDG.

Yes, but the question is the most nonstops, not just long-haul.

It might be ATL. Consider all the Delta domestic cities, all the smaller destintions served by its commuter partners, the international traffic, etc. It's got to be 350-plus cities.

I have looked to find this but don't know the answer.

I would theink the New York City region (EWR, JFK, LGA) would have the most, but no single airport would. It is the Largest O & D market in the largest economy of the world.

I have no facts to back this up- but it would make sense to me.

Atlanta does not have 350+ cities. The number is close to 200, give or take a few.

In the US, most non-stops would probably go to Atlanta, Dallas, O'Hare, Denver, or Minneapolis.

From the last Delta schedule, Delta server 184 markets nonstop (including codeshares and Delta Connection) from ATL. There are only one or two markets, if any, which are served by other airlines at ATL and not by Delta (at least a codeshare flight). LGB is an obvious example, if you count that as a separate market. So there are maybe 190 nonstop destinations from ATL. I love ATL, and the city is my home, but it has no where near the number of nonstop destinations as LHR, FRA, or CDG.

my home airport, MUC, offers 208 destinations in 68 countries with 93 different airlines.

FRA is somewhere near 400 destitnations in over 100 countries if memory serves.

I think LHR has less thanks to Bermuda II. CDG should be somewhere near 400 as well.

From the top of my head they are Moline/Quad Cities, Grand Bahamma (that will change soon), Long Beach, and Flint. And Delta Connection is adding Appleton, WI in the fall. So yeah, your 190 figure seems to be about right.

Petazulu,

In this case logic does not lead to a true statement. Despite NYC is the largest O&D in the largest economy, it does not mean it has the most cities served nonstop.

JFK, LGA and EWR added does not come close to traffic routed in LHR, LGW, STN and LUT... The figure is about 35% more in London airports...

And keep in mind that most traffic departing from London is international (few domestic services)

I would imagine FRA may have the edge as both London and Paris don't have their traffic concentrated at just one airport. Unless, of course, your name is Michael O'Leary... Wink/being sarcastic

Just for the record (and knowing that MEX is not even among the top 25 aiports)

MEX has a total of 96 non stop destinations (54 domestic and 42 international -out of which 22 are in US).

When you say nonstop what exactly do you mean? Cause every flight from an airport goes to another airport.  Smile

This came up a year or two ago and I counted them up for a bunch of airports. As I recall FRA was first and AMS was second.

Yea it would seem as FRA would be #1 and LHR close behind, although, as Petazulu said, if you're looking at cities, I would say those 2 would be close with NYC as NYC has 2 "hubs" (CO at EWR and B6 at JFK) not too mention hundreds of daily flights..

The New York area airports do not have many non-stops as people here seem to think. Hubs like Atlanta and Chicago have many more non-stop destinations, even when you combine all three area airports. New York City acts as an almost pure O&D market, which isolates many midwest, west, and even southern markets. Even Sacramento, one of America's 25 largest markets, has no non-stops to New York City (they do have non-stops to Chicago and Atlanta).
