Load On Last Flight You Took

Fri Jun 06, 2003 3:30 am

I've read a few things over the past few days that bookings are stregthening, which is great news for the industry we love. Let's hope that trend continues as airlines recover from SARS, war, etc.

To guage current demand, what was the load like on the last flight you took?

To start things off, my flight last month (American 757) from San Juan to Hartford BDL was almost 100 percent full -- just a seat or two open.

What about your last flight?

My wife flew MCI-LAS on Southwest yesterday and said the flight was full. The supersecret number I found that can give you an idea of how full the flight is also indicated that the next flight behind hers to LAS looked "bad" for non-reving. That ain't half bad for a Wednesday flight. As a shareholder in LUV, it gives me the warm fuzzies.

I don't have exact figures but 3 of the four flights I have taken in the past week (PHL-MSY A319; MSY-DCA 734; DCA-BOS A319) have been full with maybe a seat or two open in the back, with quite a few open up in First; prior to that, my BOS-PHL sector was half full in both cabins, which allowed me to take up a whole row after each passenger more or less grabbed a row for themselves.

Well, my last one was LH from MUC to FRA three weeks ago on an A320 (while an A321 was scheduled) and there were about 70 (!) free seats which isn´t that good for Lufthansa but not really unusual for a domestic afternoon flight.

BA B744 CAI-LHR. As far as I recall, it was very busy. We even had to wait for an hour upon landing in LHR for a stand to become available.

It's funny. With the exception of a few people almost everyone who has responded has noted their last flight to having loads of 75 or more per cent, yet the airlines somehow can't make money! These are strange times we're living in.

At any rate, my last flight was BA239 (LHR-BOS) and while I didn't see the other cabins, but I'd say that the flight was maybe 70-75% full.

My last flights were NW MSP-MCO and MCO-MSP, both flights had to be about 95-98% full (I was traveling with a group of 50, however).

Before that I flew a Transglobal charter operated by Ryan Air Intl. MSP-ZIH and ZIH-MSP in March. Both those flights were completely full.

My last flights:

June 02, 2003:
SkyEurope Emb 120 STR-BTS (Stuttgart-Bratislava):
26 seats out of 30 occupied

June 04, 2003:
SkyEurope Emb 120 BTS-STR:
12 seats out of 30 occupied

I think the fact that most airlines don't make money doesn't only depend on the load factor: more important is the price that the passengers that are on board pay. And with all those new low-cost-carriers around that all want to gain a part of the market, flight prices have totally declined. So even a full plane does not guarantee that the airline makes money with the flight.

About SARS: I think this might only hurt long-haul routes to special countries (China / Hong Kong and other countries, maybe also Canada). But I don't think that this affects for example inner-European flights.

In March I flew a Delta 767-300 (non ER so had two cabins of Y, one of domestic first) from DFW to ATL. The front and much smaller cabin of Y was probably 2/3 full. It would be a stretch to say that the much larger back section had five people in it. I don't know how full first was. Here is a seat map:

Also, DL ATL-FLL, ATL-LGA, and reverse those?

LHR-JFK United Airlines Flight 979
May 11, 2003
Boeing 767-300 (N647UA)
61 total pax.
2 pax in First class
11 pax in Business class
48 pax in Economy/Economy Plus Classes

I was in row 22. Guess who else was in row 22? That's right, NOBODY (my dad who was originally next to me moved back a row to have his own row)! That was a very pleasant flight.  Smile

Numerical data was obtained from the UA F/A's.

Here's a pic taken after the cabin door had been closed (no more boarding pax).

Thanks, UAL, for the quiet flight (not so good for UAL, but nice for the pax).  Big grin

Last time I flew was on AC Jazz and AC Zip from Grande Prairie (YQU), AB to Vancouver (YVR), BC via Edmonton (YEG) on Dec 19, 2002 and returning the exact same way on the 22nd.

Dec 19/02
AC8311 AC Jazz Dash 8-100 YQU-YEG - 5-6 seats left.
3J6255 AC Zip 737-200 YEG-YVR - That flight was very full. Probably no more than 2-3 seats left open.

Dec 22/02
3J6250 AC Zip 737-200 YVR-YEG - Also quite full, too. I think there were no more than 4 seats left.
AC8300 AC Jazz Dash 8-300 - 100% full. This flight was also going to Fort St. John, BC, but most passengers were headed to Grande Prairie.

The thing about Zip's loads is that on my flights, the loads were probably more the exception rather than the rule, as Zip's loads are said to be quite bad compared to WestJet's! Also, this was just a few days before Christmas, obviously during a high passenger traffic period.

My last flights were SDF - ATL - LAX - ATL - SDF. All of the flights were pretty much full.

SDF - ATL (MD-88).... Full flight, asking for volunteers.
ATL - LAX (767-300ER) Full flight
LAX - ATL (767-300ER) Full flight, though I was in BizElite so not sure of coach
ATL - SDF (MD-88).... I would say about 98% full

A friend of mine works for UA as a gate agent here at SDF. He says that almost every UA flight from ORD - anywhere on the west coast is almost always full.

I think a combination of increased bookings and fewer aircraft are resulting in very full flights.

100% full the day I was on it, and they're adding an 11th flight on that route because of the high demand.

My last flight was last Thursday on US PIT to CLT on a 757. It looked as though just about everyone had their own row.

Then CLT to MKE later that night on a 733...That flight was 80% in Y and the only 2 in 1st class was me and another student going back home from training. So 1st was wide open with no revenue pax.
