Fresno

Sat Jun 07, 2003 8:08 am

I know that we have a few Fresno area based users here. So maybe one of them can fill me in.

Fresno, as some of you may recall has always been a sort of home away from home for me. Problem is that because of work and other commitments, I have not been able to get up there in quite awhile. So.....

How is the new termimal coming along? Last time I was there, it was finally starting to take shape, although because of security, I could not get all that close to it.

Is the tall, slanted cheesy 70's blue "stick" that says "Fresno Air Terminal" still standing to greet all who enter the airport?

How far up does 180 go? Do they plan to take it all the way to Pine Flat?

Is the cheesy wall-to-floor-to ceiling red carpet tunnel still in place?

Do any of the airlines now use the jetways? Who?

Is that hulk of the old Convair still sitting on the corner of Jensen and Peach?

Any word or new thoughts on Southwest coming in?

Hi!

Well I can't tell you a lot about the past, I'm from Portugal and the reason I'm now in Fresno is because I'm studying here during this year. But due to the fact I'm an aviation enthusiast I take some time to watch what's going on here.
The Fresno Airport terminal is fully operational ( last time I used it was in August 1998 and didn't have jetways yet.... ) and they have jetways but only for medium airliners I think, AA uses the MD80, Allegiant also the MD80 and MD87. and probably America West and Horizon can use the jetways for their CRJ700 and 900's. I'm sure that the American Eagle SF340 and EMB120 from Skywest don't use the jetways.
I havent seen any news about Soutwest comming to FAT, but I know that Casino Express will come at least one day in June to make a flight to Las Vegas.
I never seen that Convair but I'll check that out!
I hope this help but as I said, I'm here for 1 year, I'm sure some FAT peopel will know more than me!
regards

Just to add, American eagle uses the jetway for its ERJ flights to LAX. Also FAT is getting a 3rd DFW round trip starting June 14.
The new terminal extension was opened in Dec.2002.

Fwy 168 is finished just past Herndon a little ways. Fwy 41 goes a few miles past the SAn Joaquin River Bridges, past the new Childrens Hospital. The new east section of Fwy 180 is under contstruction(slowly) from the 180/168 interchange to about Fowler Ave, crossing Clovis Ave just north of Belmont.

Hope all this helps....

There are some nice photos by AirNikon of the remodeled terminal in the database.

This shot shows the remodeled front. The blue look is nearly gone except for a couple of spots that will be dealt with in another expansion. The old graphic mural remains on the front of the terminal. They nearly removed it until it was discovered that public-purchased art cannot be destroyed. The mural is titled something like Wings over the Valley and is mentioned in several art books. It is supposed to depict the view from an airplane while flying over the Central Valley.

Interior and exterior of the new concourse area.

>>Is the tall, slanted cheesy 70's blue "stick" that says "Fresno Air Terminal" still standing to greet all who enter the airport?
The old sign is gone, replaced by a black stone sign similiar to those found in office parks.

>>How far up does 180 go? Do they plan to take it all the way to Pine Flat?
Freeway 180 is currently open to Chestnut Avenue. Signs take drivers from Chestnut to McKinley to the Peach Avenue airport entrance.

180 is currently under construction to Clovis Avenue with a completion date next year. A new interchange at Peach Avenue will leave travellers only 3/4 of a mile from the airport. Peach is being landscaped and improved to create a nice street into the airport. Freeway construction from Clovis Ave to Temperance Ave should start in 2004 and continue until 2007. Work from there to a spot on the current highway about a mile south of Pine Flat Dam won't start until 2005 or 2006.

Another Freeway section of 180 is being built west from Highway 99 to Chandler Airport. That section should open next year.

>>Is the cheesy wall-to-floor-to ceiling red carpet tunnel still in place?
The "disco-era" look in the concourse connector has been gone for several years. The carpet and old underground tunnel affectionately called "heart attack hill" for the effort required to carry luggage up a slope was removed in an earlier remodel.

>>Do any of the airlines now use the jetways? Who?
Jetways are used by AA, American Eagle for RJs, Horizon, Allegiant, and I believe Skywest uses them for RJs also. Currently only AWX operates from one of the old ground level gate areas.

This link will open the terminal map to show you current airline counter and gate locations.

>>Any word or new thoughts on Southwest coming in?
I haven't heard anything new in the last few months. But since Southwest held off on new cities this year that is not surprising. After 9/11 WN stopped taking meetings from cities. FAT was the one of the first they were willing to meet with after 9/11, even while still saying no to other airports. There have been a couple more meetings since then. As near as I can read, Fresno is probably a top 5 candidate, assuming no major changes by other airlines at other airports. So I'm guessing that FAT will be added within 12-18 months after WN restarts adding cities.

Oh I should add that besides the 3rd DFW-FAT flight that Tan flyr mentioned, FAT is also picking up a 3rd FAT-SEA on Horizon starting June 8. I'm expecting a new route announcement from another airline from Fresno in the next few months.

Nice to read about Fresno..I spent a lot of time there in my youth, but haven't
been there for about 20 years or so. My first commercial flight was from
SFO-FAT on a Hughes Air West DC9. I think the last time I flew into Fresno
was on a PSA 737..

Glad to see nice things happening there.

Thanks for the updates guys! Hopefully I'll be able to make another trip up there real soon.

BTW, they're not planning on turning Kings Canyon (Highway 180) into a Freeway are they? That would REALLY suck if they did.

If they are building out to Chandler, what about all of the Palm Trees along Kearny Avenue that run from about Valentine all the way to Kerman? How far do they plan to take the Freeway? Out past Kerman, to Mendota, to meet up with I-5?

Freeway 180 west is being built about 1/4 mile north of Chandler Airport so it won't be near the Palm Trees on Kearney Blvd. There are tentative plans to make 180 into a 4 lane expressway all the way to I-5, partially on a new alignment. The thought is that it would improve things for trucks hauling ag products from Sanger as well as improve access in the west side towns. Here is a description of the Freeway section now being built and the planning for the rest of the extension.

Heading toward the Sierras, 180 is being built on a new alignment between Olive and Belmont. It eventually will reconnect with the old Kings Canyon Road at about Temperance Avenue. Kings Canyon will be widened from there into a 4 lane expressway then eventually return to a 2 lane highway to the parks. These links will show you the CalTrans plans.

Of course we didn't talk about 168 which is now a Freeway from 180 (near Cedar and Belmont) all the way through Fresno and Clovis until it reconnects with the old Tollhouse alignment near the intersection of Shepherd and Tollhouse Avenues. Here is the fact sheet about the portion just completed.
