There are some nice photos by AirNikon of the remodeled terminal in the database.

This shot shows the remodeled front. The blue look is nearly gone except for a couple of spots that will be dealt with in another expansion. The old graphic mural remains on the front of the terminal. They nearly removed it until it was discovered that public-purchased art cannot be destroyed. The mural is titled something like Wings over the Valley and is mentioned in several art books. It is supposed to depict the view from an airplane while flying over the Central Valley.

>>Is the tall, slanted cheesy 70's blue "stick" that says "Fresno Air Terminal" still standing to greet all who enter the airport?
The old sign is gone, replaced by a black stone sign similiar to those found in office parks.
>>How far up does 180 go? Do they plan to take it all the way to Pine Flat?
Freeway 180 is currently open to Chestnut Avenue. Signs take drivers from Chestnut to McKinley to the Peach Avenue airport entrance.
180 is currently under construction to Clovis Avenue with a completion date next year. A new interchange at Peach Avenue will leave travellers only 3/4 of a mile from the airport. Peach is being landscaped and improved to create a nice street into the airport. Freeway construction from Clovis Ave to Temperance Ave should start in 2004 and continue until 2007. Work from there to a spot on the current highway about a mile south of Pine Flat Dam won't start until 2005 or 2006.
Another Freeway section of 180 is being built west from Highway 99 to Chandler Airport. That section should open next year.
>>Is the cheesy wall-to-floor-to ceiling red carpet tunnel still in place?
The "disco-era" look in the concourse connector has been gone for several years. The carpet and old underground tunnel affectionately called "heart attack hill" for the effort required to carry luggage up a slope was removed in an earlier remodel.
>>Do any of the airlines now use the jetways? Who?
Jetways are used by AA
, American Eagle for RJs, Horizon, Allegiant, and I believe Skywest uses them for RJs also. Currently only AWX operates from one of the old ground level gate areas.
This link will open the terminal map to show you current airline counter and gate locations.
>>Any word or new thoughts on Southwest coming in?
I haven't heard anything new in the last few months. But since Southwest held off on new cities this year that is not surprising. After 9/11 WN
stopped taking meetings from cities. FAT
was the one of the first they were willing to meet with after 9/11, even while still saying no to other airports. There have been a couple more meetings since then. As near as I can read, Fresno is probably a top 5 candidate, assuming no major changes by other airlines at other airports. So I'm guessing that FAT
will be added within 12-18 months after WN
restarts adding cities.
