Northwest A320's At NRT?

Sat Jun 07, 2003 8:01 pm

I was at Tokyo Narita yesterday and there were 2 Northwest A320's. One of them loaded with pax, and took off, the other was at a gate. Does anyone know where these fly to from NRT? and if it's US, isn't that quite a long flight for an A320??

Dont know the location but its in asia. Smaller loads needed due to SARS. More economical than 747s or DC10s

The Northwest A320's have replaced the regular Northwest 747's on the NRT-HKG route because of the decrease in demand.

NW flies A320 on flights within Asia.

to/from TOKYO
Beijing*
Busan
Hong Kong*
Kaohsiung
Taipei

to/from OSAKA
Taipei*

* = these flights were recently, or shortly will be, downgraded to the A320. It's unclear when any of these destinations will again be upgraded to the B747. It's also rumored SPN and GUM will be downgraded to the A320 shortly.

I think they do Taipei, Kaohsiung, Seoul and now Hong Kong. Apart from Hong Kong this is not due to SARS.

The NW A320's have been flying in Asia for well over a year. They were sent to serve the Asian flights out of Japan that do not have the loads to warrant a 747 or DC-10.

Thanks everyone! and there was me thinking they were flying (or attempting to fly them over to the US!)

Do they have a codesahre with a Japanese airline?

I think they have a codeshare with Japan Air System on some routes. You'll also see Continental flight numbers on those flights.

Do these A320 have any inflight entertainment installed because of their special services??? I know NWs entire narrowbody fleet has no IFE.

No, all of NW's B757 and 50 of their A320 have IFE systems, but NW doesn't utilize them on domestic flights. The A320 serving NRT are among the 50 with IFE systems and yes, NW does utilize them. Seat pitch is exactly the same in economy, although the planes have a watered-down WBC.

The ones that are currently based in NRT are:

N319US
N320US
N339NW
N340NW
N343NW
N344NW

Not sure if that's all of them

A320 based in NRT serve GUM,TPE,PUS,KHH and HKG at the moment. No, there are NO IFE on the aircraft and FC is reduced to 12 instead of the usual 16 configuration. The KIX-TPE route is still served with 744 aircraft, a continuation of the DTW-KIX flight and as we know there are no plans to change this to an airbus. SIN was recently downgraded to a dc-10 and ICN upgraded to 744.

Cdgdtw,

Better check PARS again... NRT-GUM and NRT-SPN will return to B742 and NRT-PEK and KIX-TPE will become A320. NRT-SIN will return to a B742 and NRT-PVG will become a DC-10. One of the NRT-HNL will be upgraded to a B744.

I know for a fact that the A320 have IFE in WBC even though it's watered-down version.

Well NW won't resume 742 services to HKG anytime soon, but at least they still fly here with the A320.  Smile

Before SARS, was NW considering starting services to other Mainland China destinations (e.g. CAN?).
