Addicted To Airliners.net

Tue Dec 07, 1999 2:39 pm

I would like to begin this unorthodox post by stating that unlike a lot of you I can dish it out as well as I can take it. While at times I am a little short with certain people I am almost always receptive to their comments. So feel free to call me a genius or trash my stupidity. What I don't like is people forming opinions about me based on one or two things I've said. Try to be a little open minded.

Well, here goes. Folks, I am addicted to this forum. I am constantly online always checking to see who's replied to my posts or who's had something else to say after I've written something. Currently I should be studying for exams but I've been wedged in this chair the entire day simply hanging on every word. I feel like a complete imbecile and you will probably think so too. I was just wondering has anyone else felt this effect? Obviously a fair amount of honesty is needed here.

Like I said, feel free to criticize and humiliate me. I will read every last word......

When I'm not working I'm the same way. A lot of people would say that we probably need a life. Oh well, if you're enjoying youself, then who cares?

You're Not Alone!

I'm on this forum almost every free moment I have. It's one of the more respectable ones on the 'net.

Think of this way... I could be watching Springer on the telly.

Me Too!

Tue Dec 07, 1999 3:05 pm

I try to just check up on things I've asked about, and for 'techie' posts (since Markey Post isn't here) I tell myself that this will only take a few minutes, only to find that sevral hours have gone by

If I didn't have a job, wife, and a few other interests, I'd probably average ten hours a day

So buck up! It really is more interesting than the porno sites

Or so I've been told

I'am an addict too. Just feel sad and impatient during the week-end because I'm connected from my office and don't have access to my desk every week-end. I really should take internet at home since I bought an I-mac ready for it. (this is not an advertising, I'm currently working on a PC).
Cheers all.

That is exactly it: SOMETHING

Alot of people just post whatever nonsens and irrelevant questions come to their minds. And even worse: even more just answer something to a certain post, totally irrelevant to the question. How many posts to a question start with the sentence "I don't know (~that/~what you asked), but...(blablabla)"

If you now answer like "do you think that you are... (whatever)" then you havent got the message of this entry;
THINK B E F O R E YOU POST!

It is nothing wrong with not knowing something but posting nonsense and misleading information just jams this forum and increases loadtimes etc and that makes it by far NOT the top notch forum you are saying above. Well, I dont say it cant be, some threats and answers are GREAT.

However, happy posting!

I am so glad someone gave me the address for this site.

At first, I was addicted to the photos. Now, I spend all my time in the forum area. I love to read about what other people are thinking about.

When I talk about Playboy magazine I say,

"The first thing I look at is the articles"

But when I'm on here I say,

"The first thing I look at is the pics"

Or maybe I have my priorities wrong. Maybe I should be the other way around.

I remember when I was on a trip throw Europe, while spending 3 days at Amsterdam in a youth hostel (just for sleep) when I first had the chance to connect to internet, my preocupations were to check my emails and...............check this forum.
There was only one acess to internet and a few people were asking me how many time I would be online because they also wanted to see and send emails to friends and family. I told about 20 minutes more because I was checking this forum.

Nowdays I'm not so addicted because it's becoming a little repetitive with the same type of questions.

I am surprised that I haven't been fired yet from my job; every free minute (sometimes I make myself a free minute or two = I call it my smoke-free break) I spent on this forum, especially when I have processes running on my computer.

Hallelujah brothers,

I never thought I would see the day when "God" admitted a weakness of will. Don't worry, I too am looking at developing a withdrawal program. I do not have net access at home and have actually come into work on a weekend just to log on (how sad).

The questions beg - is there a cure, and do I want to be cured?

Hmmm.

P.S. Bruce, that statement is classical - the type of stuff you read each day on the bottom of those desk calendars.

This is really great! I'm glad so many of you feel the same way although I'm sure there are plenty who wont admit the fact and come forward.

What I want to know is...has anybody got in trouble because of the forum? Like been fired (extreme case) or missed a deadline perhaps?

I've got two finals tomorrow and I haven't studied more than an hour total so I guess that qualifies

Keep those stories coming...

I have been on the forum since September 1998 and I still read it every day, unless I am away from home and don't have access to a computer. I even used a computer in the business center at the Le Meridien Changi Hotel in Singapore to read the forum and post, so I must be addicted. I think the forum is better than ever except for one thing: the pages take from 30 seconds to a minute to load. So if I miss a few days because I am away, I only go back a few pages. I don't post as often as I used to, because there are not many topics I haven't replied to before, and I don't like to keep repeating myself. But I still look forward to reading the forum each day to see what everyone has to say.

Ah, the life of a student. When I was in college, we didn't have the internet or airliners.net....and I walked uphill to school...

I only check in at while I'm at work, mostly because I have several computers at my desk and a T1 line to the internet. If somebody walks by my desk, just look busy on something else. I'll admit that I miss it sometimes when I'm away from work. Seems like most of you guys know what the heck you're talking about and it is fairly informative. Thanks Johann.

Hee hee, I too thought I was the only one. I found the site in Feb and apart from a couple of months when I was without a computer I visit at least once a day. When I found the site I was addicted to the photos for a couple of months until I found the forum. I have just had a look and I'm horrified to discover that I have done 806 posts since Feb. Wild. I agree that it's especially intriguing to see what the replies have been. I sometimes post in anger and check back by peeking through a pinhole in a piece of cardboard. Other times it's really gratifying. By the same token, I've learned a hell of a lot since I've been here.

I don't do nearly as many now because, like the excellent Bob Bradley said, I would be repeating myself (in fact I think I started repeating myself after post 478) (approx). I don't want to post anything trivial - anyone remember that guy who kept doing about eight posts a day, all of them like, "what kind of door handles do the toilets on 727s have?" (a direct quote), and, "what colour seats did the following airliners have?", then list literally a hundred different types, including real gems like Empire (upstate NY) F28s and every different generation of Delta 727.

Or that guy who was before my time, who convinced everyone he was a United 767 captain, but blew it when he insisted that Mach numbers in the cruise were measured as "M0.082" instead of "M0.82". He turned out to be a travel agent, but in his airline captain incarnation had been going onto Swissair 111 websites and telling grieving relatives all these terrible untruths about airline ops etc. There was this incredibly long thread I found in the archives where another forum contributor had done some astonishing cyber-detective work to uncover all this, and in the meantime our deluded travel agent friend had been slandering other members here and causing all kinds of ructions. If I could remember a name I would recommend any recent arrivals check it out, it was an amazing story. Anyone remember?

Special mention must go to JETPILOT, the only forum member who deserves the capital letters. Now that you're with a respectable airline, sir, you're not half as angry as you used to be, but god you were on the money in the old days when 13 year old kids would stumble upon the site and flood it with crap and trivia and 'my sister hates 757s'. These kids would get the telling-off of their lives, and deserved every word. I believe the term is to 'flame' someone. This was like a bonfire, afterburner, whatever. Pretty hot, and side-splittingly funny. We are all in your debt, not just for some well-informed technical posts but keeping us free of being swamped by morons, all of whom were usually seen off pretty swiftly. The doorknob guy took a bit of dislodging but the rest usually knew when they had met their match.

Anyway, this site is the best on the web, it's completely addictive, thank you Johann and all the members for making it so interesting. And happy Christmas, while I'm feeling so charitable. Aw, spesh.

Wow, never realized this site had such a history to it. That is really interesting indeed. I would guess there are a fair number of "impostors" among us but so what...its all for sport right?

Except for that chap telling lies to the SR 111 families. That is a bit much.

Great responses one and all!

Hey all

I just have to say the same. I'm addicted...   It's a great forum and you can learn alot about airplanes, carriers,....

I also have ICQ and sometimes when I'm reading the forum all those messages stay blinking on my ICQ. I don't post that much messages, but I read them all. Just like someone said. You can better read them rather then post something stupid.

I only know things about the european carriers, but since I discovered the forum I learn a lot of new interesting things about the US, asiatic,... carriers. Thanks everybody.

Keep posting

History

Does anyone know the time this site started?

Does anyone have any interesting stories from the forum here?? CederJet's were pretty cool. I am very intrigued that so much went on in before my time.

I don't remember how I stumbled upon this site... I guess it was through About.com or another search engine when I was looking for aviation accidents and/or commerical airliners. I think it was about a year ago.

I have only become a big user of this forum recently as I found it very interesting and at the sametime I was at a new a school and this was the closest thing to home.

In my short stint here, I have found everyone to be a sort of a family here. People are here and usually it's for the long haul. You can tell the personality types and things like that from just reading their posts.

Lots of great stories on here. I also learn quite a bit and dream of what a fascinating life it would be to wear the stripes and be at the helm of a jetliner....

Now every time I fly I'll report back with my story.

Thanks for the tech knowledge, Jim.
Way to Go, JETPILOT! (by the way, where'd ya go?)

I love the pics too. I use them for wallpaper and I made my own screensaver using my favorite ones. I have a great program that lets you build a screensaver.

Win A Fab Airline Book W/ Poem About Airliners.net

Thu Dec 09, 1999 7:34 pm

Here is your way to express your love. I am giving away a rare airline novel from the early 70s to whoever can write best poem about this website. So far (it's only been about 20 minutes admittedly) there have been no takers. But I'm sure there is some budding poet out there who can describe their addiction in four not-necessarily-rhyming lines. Check out my thread with the same name as this post and add your masterpiece.

No poetry (thank God. No, the other God).

I found this forum about 9 months ago by following a link. I am interested mostly in technical items. Unfortunately I am not able to read all threads and consequently all posts.

I do spend about an hour a day when I'm home browsing, longer if I post something lengthy, or worse, have to think about what I'm posting.

True over time, there are many redundant topics. Perhaps the longtimers get tired of seeing the repetition and simply leave, not to be e-heard from again.

Some I miss; some I don't.

BTW, God, according to your bio, you're younger than I thought!

Best Regards,

Buff
