SN Temporarily Suspends Monrovia

Thu Jun 12, 2003 7:44 am

Due to the recently worsened political situation in Liberia's capital Monrovia with rebels at less than 1km from the international airport, SN Brussels Airlines has decided to temporarily suspend its operations to Liberia as from today.

SN Brussels Airlines was until yesterday the only European airline serving Monrovia. This suspension will continue until SN can again assure the safety of their operations, pax and staff in the country once military situation has stabilized.

All SN Brussels Airlines staff (expatriate and local) working for the airline have been evacuated from Monrovia by paratroopers and are safely aboard a French Navy ship off-shore.

All passengers, who had made reservations on the flights to Monrovia have been contacted by SN Brussels Airlines and will be able to make a new reservation on an ulterior date, make a reservation to another destination or obtain a full refund.

SN Brussels Airlines continues to operate normally to its 12 other African destinations. In fact, as from June 30, 2003, SN Brussels Airlines flies 3 (iso 2) times a week to Abidjan following the return of stability in the Ivory Coast.

Very interesting Sabenapilot!
Never knew that they were the only european airline flying to Monrovia. In a "normal" situation they must have quite heavy loads on that route with expats from all over Europe passing via BRU.

Did you know the cheapest fare (economy-restricted) BRU-ROB is at €1,600 (almost $1,900) and the highest fare (business class) will set you back well over €6,000 ($7,000)?

No wonder SN has no intentions of sending planes across the Atlantic (at ticket prices not even a fifth of those on Africa....)
