Italy:explosives On Plane Waiting To Board Pax (?)

Fri Jun 13, 2003 7:35 am

From AP (on Haaretz online, June 12):

23:35 Italian authorities find explosives on domestic plane waiting to board passengers (AP)

Any info?
I bitterly miss the livery that should never have been changed (repetition...)

Plane was an Alitalia Express ATR-72, flight AZ1128 from Ancona Falconara (AOI) to Rome FCO.

Apparently the Carabinieri received an anonymous call warning about a bomb on board the plane, and a suspicious-looking packet was found hidden under a seat; it was disguised as a life jacket. Passengers had not boarded yet, so the packet was taken to a remote zone of the airport and made explode. The bigger-than-expected deflagration confirmed that it contained explosives.

Right now the aircraft is stuck at Ancona at disposal of the local authority.

Very lucky that the tip was called in. I wonder if it was a terrorist who had a last-minute change of heart or moment of conscience...?
Someday, we'll look back at this, laugh nervously, and then change the subject.

I wouldn't be surprised if they find out that there was no explosive after all.

I am always suspicious when I read lines like: "The bigger-than-expected deflagration confirmed that it contained explosives".

Sounds real to me...

"An airport source said the device was believed to have contained some 200 grams (seven ounces) of explosives which caused a large blast when detonated at a remote part of the airport."
