Airbus Announcement Tomorrow: New A380 Customer?

Wed Jun 18, 2003 7:18 am

There is an Airbus announcement scheduled for tomorrow morning at 10:45. It isn't Qatar Airways (expected Thursday). According to the following article from the FT, it will probably be a 6 plane MOU from a new Asian customer.

Perhaps Korean.

A customer that was awaited to confirm a commitment for six A380s? That is likely Malasyia Airlines.

Alain,

Yes but the article says the customer will sign an MOU. As you know, Malaysia Airlines already signed an MOU...

Oops! Sorry, I should have read the article more carefully! Then KAL indeed looks the best placed for that MoU.

My guess is that Air China (CA) will be the next customer for the A380-800, possibly the first customer for the Convertible version (if Airbus does offer it).

Such a plane would be very common sight at SFO given that CA's PEK-SFO-PEK route always has a lot of cargo being loaded and unloaded from the back of the 747-400 Combi used on this route.

What about Asiana or Thai Airways? There's definitely a potential for the aircraft out of BKK. If Malaysia needs it, then Thai does even more.

Hello Udo,

Agreed, but
1. Thai Airways will be taken more (cheap) 747-400s.
2. Why wouldn't an A380 order have come up along with the A340NG one?

Asiana Airlines seems to be quite a young airline to order such an airplane, even though they have had impressive growth rates in their first years. But they are now focusing on Asia markets and China in particular, which they say is more profitable than intercontinental routes.
