Anyone Flown Ethiopian Airlines?

Wed Jun 18, 2003 6:52 am

I am flying this airline to Tanzania next month from LHR via Addis Ababa (no other flight was available). Does anyone know what they are like as an airline and what equipment will they use?

Ethiopian is a great classic airline, never flew them myself but heard good things about them, they will not treat you like your average African airline.

As for equipment, probably 767, could be 757.

Flew them from Bombay to Lagos via Addis Ababa in about 1994 on a Boeing 767-200.

Excellent inflight service, wonderful flight attendants, dont remember the food. The 762 was in very good condition and Addis Ababa airport was surprisingly pleasant for the 3 hour transit stop. All in all, a very cool experience.

I should mention that I am flying direct to Kilimanjaro airport (not Dar Es Salaam) as I am on an expedition to climb Mount Kilimanjaro.

Thanks for the replies thus far

I flew Ethiopian back in 1992 from JIB to DIR and then to ADD on a B-727. I was on transit to NBO and, since there were not connecting flights on the same day, they put me in the Addis Ababa Hilton for that night (price was included in the air fare).

I got to tour around a little bit the Ethiopian capital and headed to the airport the next morning. The flight to NBO was overbooked and the check-in counter was quite a chaos scene. I was almost left out of the plane, but I was eventually given a First Class seat. The ride to NBO on a B-757 was very nice. Food was superb, and service really good (of course it was First Class...  Wink/being sarcastic). The plane was in a very good condition, and I had a very nice impression of the ADD airport. I think they recently built a new terminal there, so it should be still better now.

Ethiopian people... great people!!!

I flew them in 1992 from Lilongwe to Kampala to Addis Ababa to Dire Dawa to Djibouti. Had to overnight in Addis. B-757 three class configuration and older B-727 from Addis to Djibouti. Flights were on time, planes immaculate, food fairly good. They had a mechanic on all the flights. Ethiopian is the best airline in Africa, save perhaps for SAA. Highly recommend them. Addis is also a fascinating city.
