Thai NOT Getting UA 744's?

Wed Jun 18, 2003 5:59 pm

Can any of you confirm what I've just seen in the latest Aviation Letter (June)

It says that Thai Airways International will not proceed with its purchase of 7 747-400's from United Airlines after some of United's Creditors objected to the price and blocked the deal.

If this is true thats some serious money not going into UA's pockets!!

Could be a good thing, though...

Could possibly signify a necesity for the added capacity the 744 has, especially considering that with the re-negotiated leases, some of the 744's are cheaper to operate than some 777 aircraft...

So what are UA going to do with them? Put them back into service or try and sell them to someone else for more money?

A UA friend said that the -400's will be flying more because they are cheaper to operate than the 777's. The crew costs are the same and apparently, the lessors were beaten down enough to lower the costs below the 777. Amazing, if it's true.

Bids(open positions for pilots) for the -400 and displacements for 777 are out.TC

I thought United owned most if not all of those -400s?

If one thinks about it, it does seem logical that United's 747-400s would be cheaper to operate at this point than some of their 777s. The 747s are older and therefore have less expenses each month. Some of the 777s are almost brand new and UAL continues to pay them off. Every flight with a 744 is money in the bank because it is payed off unlike the 777.

Island hopper--Maybe the 777 lessors wouldn't come down or UA might have sold the -400's to generate cash.TC

How many are now parked up?

I know that N109UA has LEFT the fleet already for the middle East but how many are parked in Victorville for example?
