DL Announces CVG-HNL N/s Always A Surprise

Fri Jun 20, 2003 2:38 am

This industry always surprises me!

Delta just announced non-stop service from CVG to HNL, daily with 767-400s departing CVG at 1pm.

The return leaves HNL at 8:40pm and arrives CVG at 9:50am.

Did anyone see this coming. These guys are always announcing things that surprise me.

This isn't that shocking to me. Delta flights to HNL are almost always full. While it is true that a large percentage of those seats are Frequent Flier seats, Delta does actually sell some seats on those flights. Adding additional capacity to HNL helps improve its frequent flier offering. In addition, CVG is Delta's 2nd largest hub and Comair's largest operation. This gives one more easy 1-stop connection for people throughout the NE and Midwest to HNL.

It's not scheduled to start until 01NOV. We shall see if it ever leaves the ground. CVG-FCO was planned but did not.

DL’s options for getting to HNL for those living in the Northeast and Midwest have always been tedious. The new CVG-HNL nonstop easily shaves 90 minutes of travel time off a long flight. However, as a result of this new service, feed will undoubtedly be stolen from SLC, LAX and SFO-HNLLAX-HNL may be reduced to once daily, or SLC/SFO may be cancelled.

DL’s service to Hawaii in the fall (all B764):
1xATL-HNL
1xCVG-HNL
1xSLC-HNL
2xLAX-HNL
1xSFO-HNL
1xLAX-OGG

DL’s service to Hawaii at its peak (all L1011):
1xATL-HNL
1xDFW-HNL
5xLAX-HNL
1xSFO-HNL
2xHNL-OGG

The CVG FCO flight was cancelled because of the war in Iraq and the downturn in transatlantic passengers.

No city is supposed to lose service because of the CVG flight. I, too, wonder if LAX might become once daily.

Any word on JFK-HNL DL service? Someone had mentioned that once the 767-400 crew rest issue was resolved, this flight would be started.

JFK-HNL might be a little tough given that it would rely mostly on O+D. However, given DL's push into the leisure market, I think JFK-HNL might be a possibility in the next year or two.

CVG-HNL does help open up the midwest to HNL. Many smaller midwestern markets have to double connect in order to reach HNL....this service will allow more single connections. I'm sure the Hawaiian gov't is happy to see this service as they have frequently complained about a lack of connection to the Eastern US.

JFK-HNL could be useful to get European travellers to Hawaii...

Do many Europeans vacation in Hawaii?

I have always seen a lot of Europeans in Hawaii. The JFK flight would have to be timed right for the connections, which shouldn't be too hard.

Actually, there are not too much European travelers in Hawaii. The total amount of European travelers is probably less than 30,000 a year. The travel time is a big turn off, often involving long waits between flights. They have a lot of closer destinations that offer sun, surf, and sand. However, those that do come stay for long periods.

SAN-HNL with an L1011 operated for a long time as well.

HNL-JFK-Europe connections (actually, HNL-anywhere-in-the-U.S.-Europe) would be pretty brutal, considering you'd have to leave HNL close to midnight, arrive at JFK in the late afternoon, and then fly overnight again to Europe.

It was dropped in favor of SFO-HNL.

Any chance of DFW-HNL being restarted? I thought the reason it was dropped was due to crew rest issues on the 764 after the L1011's were retired.

Blink182,

No, I don't think DL will not restarted nonstop from DFW-HNL flight either and that was some of long time ago after L1011s is retires. I was flown nonstop from ATL-DFW-HNL by one-stop in DFW some of their passengers stop in DFW and then going straight to HNL flight. It was very long flight. It was flight #17 from ATL-DFW-HNL. I still kind of remember these flight of 7 years ago. Well, talk ya later!  Smile

Regards!

It’s my understanding that DFW-HNL would’ve been cancelled even if DL had never retired its L1011. I doubt it will return. If it does, it won’t be for awhile… DL will want to monitor the performance of its existing HNL markets long after the CVG and ATL flights inaugurate/ reinaugurate.

Maybe Delta Connection will pick up DFW-HNL on a CRJ?  Laugh out loud

DL is cashing out the Skymile accounts of the large number of members in the CVG area. Alot of connection traffic through CVG too, thus the scheduled afternoon departure. HNL is a leisure market.

I flew to London/Heathrow via Chicago. Not too bad. I flew AA and it was a 5:45pm departure to ORD. Arrival at Chicago was something like 6 in the morning. Then AA90 from ORD (at 9am) to LHR. Arrive LHR at something like 10:45pm.

Also, you could fly to LAX for the connection to LHR all in a day. UA has 1-stop service via LAX on the same plane...Only one night. Not as bad as many think.
